reader50 Posted January 7, 2004 Posted January 7, 2004 No offense taken here, a lively team board is a nice thing to visit. Our team forum has sometimes gone quiet, this invariably results in a drop in production. A drop in rank follows if the quiet period goes on too long. I'd not even object to a little Mac vs PC stuff, by all accounts the PPC970 can hold it's own. Wish I had one for um, testing. Assorted games and DC clients should offer excellent test material... However, we will of course bow to the local board rules. Folding it is. Doing more of it would be a good idea right now.
Eva_Unit_0 Posted January 7, 2004 Posted January 7, 2004 What vintage of mac?? In my expirence older=worse. (try classic, or lc) @school = akkkk. Where I came from the internet was slooowww by default new mac or old, pc or not. no need to bash. My exprience with g4s has been positive. I have never used a g5, and probily won't cause my college is mostly pc. It was an early-model iMac. (350mhz G3) Also, I wasn't bashing. I just thought it was funny that a mac froze while opening a mac page, but never complained about occ, a pc site. Just seemed kind of ironic. The internet isn't too bad on the iMacs in the computer lab where I was, but the iBooks that our science department has are horrendous on the internet. I find that weird because the iBooks are actually a lot faster than the iMacs (since the iMacs are old). The iBooks get connection errors a lot...probably someting to do with an airport being too far away or something. My school also has some brand-new dell pc's, but I never get to use them because they're for the business department. mazakman Posted January 7, 2004 Posted January 7, 2004 Hi reader50, it's good to see you here at our forum. Take the time to explore the wealth of PC knowledge in our forums, much like the wealth of knowledge for Macs over at MacNN. You never know, you might get converted! Enjoy your time here sir! reader50 Posted January 8, 2004 Posted January 8, 2004 UT - the real one, not the 200x versions. If my Folding production falls, it's usually due to UT. It was *HEAD SHOT* cleverly designed to kill production from DC clients. I just ran an alternate interteam stats run focused on OCC instead of us. It can be viewed here. You have quite a few teams ahead that will get to know you better - in particular, the PimpRig people have about run out of time. I give it 30 hours max. The "yesterday stats" column is mostly garbage in tonight's tables, Stanford turned off their stats server yesterday around when I was doing that night's stats run. The rest of the data is ok. No promises on updating this special copy each day - but I probably will just for fun. Eva, about the iBooks in the lab. They are probably all on a single Airport1 hub (802.11b), which is rated at 11 Mb/s under ideal conditions (about the same as USB 1.1), and should host no more than 10 computers at a time. If 30 students are on it in the lab, and they break down like this: 10 students transferring MP3 files 10 students randomly browsing the internet 5 students thinking about nothing and doing nothing 2 students studying other student's assignment papers 1 student sleeping 1 student working on class work 1 student (Eva) trying to load a web page ... then I would not be surprised if the web page doesn't load so well. tazwegion Posted January 8, 2004 Posted January 8, 2004 That's a nice link thanks However... what does Mmbrs Chng mean please? And does it come in retro flavours?
reader50 Posted January 8, 2004 Posted January 8, 2004 Mmbrs Chng = Members Change (turnover) during the last 7 days. On Folding, it's only positive turnover because they lock people into teams. On SETI, dFold, and others, you can lose people too.
Eva_Unit_0 Posted January 8, 2004 Posted January 8, 2004 reader50: Yeah, there's only one airport for about 20 computers. And to make matters worse, our teacher will have a particular site that he wants us to visit, so all 20 computers are trying to load the same page over one connection...needless to say, that doesn't work. Your breakdown was pretty accurate to the situation, though(1 student doing actual work )...I just wish that the macs at school weren't neutered. They're set up to use that stupid "panels" system where you can't really do anything but launch word or internet explorer. To my delight, however, they all have the microsoft stuff on them. (word, powerpoint, IE, etc.)
