Overclocked 2500xp Ram

Im new at overclocking and im trying to overclock my cpu (2500xp) to 2.2ghz through the frontside bus. I got it to work but when burning it in i kept getting a ram dump error. Most of my hardware is quality except my ram (512 kinston value krap) and i need something thats affordable and known to work well with my system.

I currently have:

Athlon XP 2500 barton w/ volcano 9 cooler (30c)

Asus A7N8X-X nForce2 (non dual channel)

512mb PC3200 Kingston value ram

80gig WD 8mb HD

ATI radeon 9600XT

Im hoping that the ram is the problem, and if switching to Corsair 512MB PC3200 CAS-2 184pin DDR (Corsair CMX512-3200C2) would fix that.

If anybody has any suggestions to fixing my problem or recommending good midrange ram that works with this setup plzzzzzzzzzz help!!!

When running at 2.2ghz you're running 11x200, right? If so, then the ram shouldn't be the problem. Although it's value ram, it's still rated to run at 200fsb. Memory dumping is what windows xp is programmed to do if a critical error occurs. I'd say that the problem is actually processor instability. Did you raise the vcore at all while overclocking? Whatever it is, I'd raise it a notch or two and try again.

The stock Vcore is 1.65 on a barton, move it up to something like 1.675 or 1.7 in the BIOS

Also, I used to get memory dumps, but it was beause of a corrupt file or harware device. It is clearing the RAM so it can safely shut down, the RAM i doubt it the problem. Look to see if it does it again and in the top left it will list something that was the fault of the memory dump.

Mine was something like USB root hub, because the onboard USB hated hooking up a 2.0 and a 1.1 device at the same time and would crap out when it tried to use them. Check to see what error is causing the mem dump and report back.

Thanks again for everyones help

Heres what happened. Previously when I overclocked it I had access violations in aquamark3. After changing the core voltage to 1.675 the access violation occurred much later in the benchmark. (promising) So I upped the voltage to 1.7 and voila no access violations. java script:emoticon(':D')

java script:emoticon(':D')

I have some questions tho.

1) If my processor is stable enough to finish the full suite of PcMark04 benchmarks and aquamark3, should I be satisfied with stablilty or do I need to run a long term burn in?

2) When I was running at stock speed with my stock heatsink and fan my PC was around 54c. I think thats a bit high. Since it wouldn't even start up when oc'ed it, I added a thermal take volcano 9 and used arctic silver 5. The temp dropped to 34c. With the voltage at 1.7 the temp is now at 39c. I doubt the accuraccy of the mobo temperature sensor but I dont wanna risk anything so Im running my volcano9 fan at full speed(extremely loud). I also have two exhaust fans and the powersupply fan running. Currently the setup is way too noisy. I was wondering whats the best way to reduce the sound volume without a temp increase? Maybe a high volume cpu fan thats quieter or disabling one of the case fans... any suggestions are welcome.

thanks

39C is great u dont have to worry about overheating. try setting your fan on its lowest speed and then check the temperatures. the faq on this site suggests that the temperature on a cpu should stay below 40C on idle and below 55C on load. dont worry about your voltage being at 1.7 and wondering if its too high. once u start going about 1.850, then u should start re-thinking, but from what u have right now, everything is a-o-k.
