Quality MP3 Player

Ok, so I have been doing research on mp3 players to try and find the best quality sound mp3 player that I could get. I haven't been able to get a good solid answer. I saw that the Sandisk clip had great sound quality and the fuze is suppose to share the same aspect but it wasn't a well known fact and I am thinking that it may just be a personal opinion by some. There is only one brand that comes up a more than an average amount of time when i research great sounding mp3 players and that is Cowon but i still would like to get more opinions on it.

Ok now that's out of the way to be more specific I am looking for is a mp3 player that plays lossless codecs preferably ogg/flac, doesn't need anything fancy just that. I am looking for the best sounding player. To explain, because i know people say its a matter who is listening, I want something that has little to no distortion, as close to neutral as possible across all frequencies, highest s/n ratio, the least amount of background noise ex/hissing, noise, buzzing, stuff like that.

What I need from the people of OCC is facts, links to reviews, personal opinion is ok but I would love if other people would give their opinion on another persons personal opinion. No fanboism please.

Thank you for all you help.

sony network walkman E series

i own an older E series that looks like a thumbdrive and believe me you're gonna love the clear stereo and clear bass feature it got a clear high range sound and deep bass without any distortion and i bet this new one is far much better.

I have heard about the great sound quality of the sony players too. I'll look into those. The clear bass and clear stereo feature is that processed effects to help noise? I like things that help the sound but not an effect that changes the sound and the audio isn't natural and accurate anymore.

As for creative I thought that they would be good but I searched a little and found that creative's sound quality isn't that great. I even thought the x-fi they have out would be great considering the x-fi is amazing. But apparently not. (unless someone can prove me wrong with some links)

I am not looking for a headphone amp, its not something I want to carry with me. But if I just wanted to have it for home use I would consider it.

I never searched any toshiba mp3 players, are they any good in the sound area? Links?

Still a great response from the Cowon players... :)

Any more info would be great.

the clear stereo remove hiss from songs and make music sound more vibrant at high range, you can clearly hear every word coming out from the singer even at high volume from left and right channel while the clear bass controls the bass sound so you can get deep controlled bass at high volume when other player starts to distort. i notice this when i first change from my iRiver mp3 player and for your information i use a sonyericcson HPM-77 earbud cause i i don't like long wire and the sound is just superb ^_^

I'm not sure I'm one to talk since I'm not a super audio buff but my Creative Zen's have always provided a very clean audio experience (as long as the speakers or headphones that were paired with it were good)

I've tried a few out and owned my fair share over time too.

- Creative Jukebox 6GB (before ANY of the iPods)

- Creative 128MB stick type jobbie

- Creative Zen 4GB

- Sony 16GB

Having listened to a few others too, I rank sound quality in this order:

Cowon>Sony>Creative>Apple

The thing that lets creative down is build quality, or rather, lack of it.

I'd recommend the Cowon players (for the sound quality) that support Rockbox, due to the 5-band parametric EQ (I've never seen this as a standard feature on any DAP, it totally kills a 5-band fixed frequency graphic EQ), and the ability for gapless and almost every format, including multiple lossless (e.g. WavPack, FLAC, ALAC, APE, etc)...

Strongly recommend you check out the relevant sections of head-fi.org forums for DAP reviews and discussions regarding sound quality
