4870 vs 260GTX

Recommended Posts

I have no idea which one I should get. My spec rigs are in my sig, I wanna get a new GPU since I'll be playing games like crysis and such and want smoother fps in the games I play now, even in TF2 I only get 40fps even without AA on, I play at 1680x1050 and I have vista 32 bit right now but I'm gonna get Windows 7 x64 and 4 more gigs of ram for 6 gigs as soon as I can "find" a copy.

I'd say get the 260 (make sure it's a core 216 or you're wasting your money) unless the 4870 (1GB) is $30 or more cheaper. They are about equal with eachother but if you're going to overclock the card, 4870's don't quite overclock as well as a 260, and if you aren't overclocking than get the 4870

right now stick with your 8800 and wait till 5870 come out , save your money and get 5870 it will be faster than 4890 and maybe 4870x2

it will get out soon at a good price 299 usd i think , i read the news at techpowerup ......

if you insist on getting a card now i say if you can get gtx 260 216 that one is as fast as 4870

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16814161294 this one is very good and it is better than the following card

.........but it is better to wait , 5870 is worth waiting and if you can not get one , then go with 4870 or gtx 260 216 , and the price for those two will drop .......or you can get a better card gtx 275 and it`s price will drop too ...............:).......................

Outperforms ATI Radeon HD 4870 1GB in many cases;

but , i still suggest waiting , you have a card a good one , so i say stick with it for a while ............

get a 2nd 8800GT? I ran two of them in SLi before and the performance was pretty good [Crysis on medium-high settings]. You can get 8800GT's for less than $100 on eBay

*edit - looked up your mobo and saw that it isn't an SLi board so my idea is out unless you sell your mobo and buy a different one :P

Damn I simply cannot find a recent review with both the GTX 260 and the 4870 1GB in it to show how both perform now.

Thanks for all the replies, because I can't really spend more than 150 bones, I'll go ahead an upgrade to the 260, a friend of my is gonna buy my 8800 for 70$ So that'll offset the cost a bit.

Thats a good choice, But do make sure you get some more RAM asap. 2GB is about bare minimum for a 64bit OS while gaming. Even 32bit I'm sure you'd see a great improvement

Yeah i remember in my hunt for a 260 for my friend I got a 192sp, so I returned to the seller since he claimed it was 216sp. He was like "I have both and the performance is unnoticable between the two", I was like "Get da hell outta here, the 216 is a much better card" I'm so glad the 4870 pressured nvidia into adding more shaders or the 260 wouldn't have been as good a card as it is today.

god dam sellers , i remember when i was new to the pc world and was going to get ati card i did not now what are they and some one told me they are better than nvidia`s , so i went to get 2900xt i found power color and sapphire , i asked they guy , which is better power color or sapphire , he said of course power color it is better than asus and gigabyte , i took what he said and power color suck , and the fan died after 4 weeks i did not overclock it all i did was increasing the speed and it died from that ................till now power color is not on my list when getting ati card although there are few cards they made which seem to be good .............sellers are....................( can not write bad words )......:)

You sir, use a lot of periods in your writing :P

I already knew about the 216 core but thanks for the heads up anyways. The 4890 is interesting but I'll pass.
