phenom II x2 550 BE is the best for a persons money?

I've heard that this processor owns because you can unlock two extra cores and overclock it like crazy....to like 3.8Ghz no problem. So basically, you get a fast quad core for $100.

Is this true...? There has to be some cons. Lol

most likely you will not get 3.8 with the stock heatsink

it is gamble if any of your cores can be unlocked, don't count on it, but appreciate it if you can

this is a great processor because the value vs. performance is unmatched

Well its basically luck of the draw. You have to get the right motherboard with the right bios and HOPE that the other two cores arent Faulty.

Basically dont buy the chip just because you think you might possibly get 2 free cores out of it.

EDIT: im slow, potato beat me to it

It's a great dual core with the *potential* of being a great triple or quad core processor. Like potato said though, don't count on it. Most likely even if the core unlocking is successful it may be hard to overclock to 3.8ghz since the other cores may be lower quality and need more voltage to do the same work and thus AMD shut them down for a reason. If you want a happy medium (with less chance to worry about) then the x3 720 is a good option as well
