Crow47 Posted July 27, 2009 Posted July 27, 2009 Hey OCC, it's been awhile. I have two digital copies of some movies in itunes, notably Quantum of Solace and Watchmen. Stereo output works fine, however when I switch to 5.1 output, I get nada. I have tried this under two scenarios. First, with the typical PC surround setup of the speakers over the minijacks, and once again with my current setup of coaxial digital going to my Denon AV surround receiver. Just to be sure, I have looked at the file info, and "stereo" is listed as well as "Dolby Digital 5.1". How do I actually get iTunes to output the 5.1? Are there other programs that might be able to play these files? Or might there be some sort of article on the internet that I can be referred to that may help me with my problem? Thanks in advance, everybody!
Cyrosis Posted July 28, 2009 Posted July 28, 2009 MPC Home Cinema perhaps? What format are they in exactly?

hardnrg Posted July 28, 2009 Posted July 28, 2009 I think it's just an audio decode/passthrough issue. I'm guessing the files are DRM-protected, so that kinda limits player choices? This might help: DTS passthrough method http://support.apple.com/kb/TA47850?viewlocale=en_US Dolby / DTS passthrough comments (basically the same as the previous link): http://blogs.oreilly.com/digitalmedia/2008...ound-sound.html
Crow47 Posted July 28, 2009 Posted July 28, 2009 Thanks, nrg, I'm gonna try that as soon as I get home!
Crow47 Posted August 2, 2009 Posted August 2, 2009 It looks like iTunes is incapable of playing 5.1. It appears the 5.1 is only there for owners of an Apple TV. What a disappointment. Though I have to admit I'm not surprised.
email2markt Posted August 3, 2009 Posted August 3, 2009 iTunes hasn't traditionally been capable of it, but since iTunes 8.2.1, i'm now able to pass-thru 5.1 content through the optical out of my mac. Not sure if it's the same for Windows. Also, got this working using content purchased on the iTunes store.
