Flash To Pro

Recommended Posts

I've heard about people flashing their Radeon 9700's to 9700Pro's and 9800Pro's to 9800XT, but does that work with other cards too? Could I flash a 9200 to 9200Pro? How big of a risk do I run when I flash to Pro?

yeah, I guess you could flash any card that has a higher clocked counterpart. There aren't really too many risks since even if the flash goes bad you can just use a pci video card to re-flash the dead one. However, not all cards can handle the pro speeds. The cores usually have no problem running at pro speeds, but the ram can be a different story. The non-pro or se variant of cards tend to come with rather cheap ram (since the ram is where most of the clock speed difference takes place from pro to non-pro). You'll have to check the rated speed of the ram on the card, and see how it compares to the stock pro speeds. It's still worth a try, though, as you could always underclock the ram to fit its needs after you flash it.

Look on the memory to see what its rated speed is. On the chip there will be the manufacturer's name, and then a great big long string of letters and numbers. The last two (or maybe just one) numbers are the speed rating is nanoseconds. The two numbers have an implied decimal. So if you have xxxxxxxxxxxxx32, that means it's 3.2 ns ram. Divide 1000 by the number to get the maximum speed, non-ddr. So in the example above, 1000/3.2 = 312.5. 312.5 x 2 = 625mhz ddr. Then of course you can expect to get maybe 40mhz or so above the rated speed, more if you have ramsinks. If the rated speed is close (i.e. 500mhz) I'd go for it. However, I've seen a lot of cards (usually low-end cards, 9200 cards included) where the ram is already running at its max rated speed. If that's the case, then I don't think it could handle it.

The core would have no problems at all.

because the pro bios sends more voltage to the core and ram. (due to the higher clocks of the pro versions) Thus, you tend to get higher overclocks on a pro bios. A lot of cards can't reach pro speeds on a non-pro bios, but will run fine at pro speeds on a pro bios. My 9700np could only get to 600mhz memory before artifacting occured on a non-pro bios, but on the pro bios I have the memory running at 636mhz no problem.

Edit: Hehe...this was my 636th post.

No, you can't flash to 9700pro to anything else. What you CAN do, however, is volt-mod it and overclock like crazy.

Also, the utility you'll need to flash is called "atiflash." You can just google it.
