I need help making a really inexpensive build.

If you want to just make your laptop run better in the meantime, you could always do a fresh format and OS install. That usually produces a noticeable difference in performance. That's assuming you have everything worthwhile on your windows drive/partition backed up, or that you can make that happen.

I don't have the OS disc. Toshiba never included one when they sent my PC back from repairs. It's out of warranty now and the recovery disc program never actually worked. And I have tons of files and no good way to back them up. Right now, I'm going to have to just use it until after September. I feel stupid every day for backing into someone. The part that's worst is not knowing how much I have to pay and being forced to wait until September to find out. I could say "Screw it" and buy a PC but I could end up in some legal issues if I don't pay the ticket.

I would really like some more opinions/advice. My laptop is driving me nuts. It's gotten to the point where it takes upwards of 10 minutes to boot up. It takes all of the available resources (CPU speed, RAM, etc.) to run Vista and leaves me with tons of frustration trying to do ANYTHING. Even typing this is giving me a headache. Why, oh why, in my great wisdom did I get a laptop? I can't even upgrade this thing. Note that the OS is "clean." No junk files, viruses, or anything like that.

Thanks.

wouldn't it be an idea to get help with your laptop so that you DO know what's wrong with it?

What if the medicin costs you 100dollarskies? Would be a good temporarely solution, not?

Seems nice. The video card is up to you. As i am kind of a nVidia fan (not fanboy!). If id have the money id take the GTX 280.... but the HD 4870 is much cheaper and still performs very nice.

I can't really afford to spend any money right now. The ticket could range anywhere from $200 to $2000 depending on the judge's decision. I'd rather be safe.

I'd say wait until you get the ticket and then go from there.

As for your laptop, as long as you have your product key, you could always download vista in whatever edition and architecture you're running then burn the iso to a disc (It's legal as long as you own and use the key)

I'd say try that to see if you can get a slight extension on your dying laptop's life.

I'd try and get a motherboard sporting a 790 northbridge and 700 southbridge for the best experience. (though I'm not sure how that would affect the backwards compatibility with a really old chip), you could however get an x2 550 for now and maybe upgrade to an x4 940 down the road (though I guarantee you that the 550 will be keep you plenty happy, and if you're lucky and your motherboard supports it, then you could make it a tri or quad core)

for memory go 2x2GB 800mhz 4-4-4-12 like Verran said

harddrive is all preference (though don't get less then 32mb cache)

you may find that in the lower price bracket that ati cards are much better investments (unless you have enough money for the 260, which has the best price/performance out right now)

Thanks, lol. I like Static-X a lot. The song "I'm with stupid" is up there in my favourites. :)

And I am considering Windows 7. What is its expected release date? I may use the Windows 7 upgrade option if I go with Vista.

Windows 7 looks good, but it's got a few features I don't agree with, namely the taskbar. What were they thinking with taking out the names and only using the logos in little squares?

Oh well. If it works, I'll just get used to it.

Change that in preferences.

Jeez.
