Linux is Opensource and is based off of Unix (some people say it isnt but it is unix like which, IMHO means the same thing)... Linux is free, there are many different tyoes avaibile today... they are called distros... Linux is slightly harder to set up but will be nicer in the future... finally, linux can play some games but not a lot... currentlly the big games that ot can play are UT2k3, and Quake3 (also Quake and Quake2 and mods). For beginers try redhat, once you learn how to do stuff in Redhat you can then move onto a slightlly harder distro. such as Slackware or Gentoo, Linux installs programs differentlly than windows... some programs come in a thing called an RPM (Redhat Package Managment) these are really easy to install but are binaries so you dont get a speed boost that you would get from compiling from source... there are also source tarballs... these are very nice as they can install on ANY platform (most can even install on Cygwin, a linux emulator for windows) finally in a few distros there are things called ebuilds... these basicall will get the source for you and all you have to do is type 1 line of code... Linux is also dangerous... as you can delete the entore system if you play around as root... finally a good place to download linux is linuxiso.org

Hope that helped :)

Linux is great, but changing from windows to Linux will take long to get used to, you are going to struggle... I understand when you say you want to get away from the mainstreem I totally agree. I HATE the windows setup so that leads me to search for alternatives, I have tried Linux but I have found it isn't for me, maybe if I gave it more time I would learn to like it, but I didnt... I did find something else it is called Lightstep .. you can search it up on google. forgo the link.. basicaly its another shell that you put ontop of XP.. not just changing the theme.. but the ENTIRE setup, it takes some time to get used to, but when you do learn it its great, you can download themes for it too. Its a very basic, extremly funcionable and visually pleasing alternative. I think you should give it a try.
