lost Posted June 19, 2009 Posted June 19, 2009 How loud and how much heat does the card get? I'm looking to upgrade me old and dieing 1950 Pro [it was a nice card, I remember I sold of my 8800 because it was louder and would generate a lot of heat]. I was thinking about a 4770, but the amount of positive reviews for the 260 is hard to ignore, and there's a sell on Dell for 130 with mail in rebate. bilcliff Posted June 19, 2009 Posted June 19, 2009 it depends on your tollerance. using the nvidia control pannel with the fan set on 40% or lower i cant hear it over my other case fans. if i crank it to 100% its loud. and i have bad hearing. i'm not sure how it compares to the GTX 280 or GTX295 loudness though unless you overclock it massively or run something like crysis on max res n stuff you wont really need to crank the fan past 60% which is bareable in my opinion. heat again it depends. atm mine's idle at about 40C on the GPU with the fan on 40% and room temp is about 14C i dont have crysis or far cry to so i cant say ive ever really pushed the card to its max. but when i game it barely breaks 60C if i leave the fan on 40% hope this helps
lost Posted June 19, 2009 Posted June 19, 2009 (edited) Yes that was helpful information. thank you. It's just that my parents are very stingy with the AC. They only turn it on when it's very hot outside. When I had the 8800 before, my room would get very hot compared to the other rooms. It generated a lot of heat. So a video card that doesn't roar at night would make it possible to sneak gaming time during the night. I haven't updated the comp spec in my signature in a while, but the current spec on my comp is Core 2 Duo 6600 @ 2.4 Ghz, with 2GB of DDR2 RAM (thinking about adding another 1GB(512x2) for dual boxing WOW, and my current video card Sapphire 1950 Pro. The three cards I am thinking of right now are 260, 4870, or go light with a 4770. Edited June 19, 2009 by lost
Zertz Posted June 19, 2009 Posted June 19, 2009 If you don't tinker with fan speeds (which I don't) it's pretty quiet Heat wise, well it's on par with a 8800. A 4770 will run as hot but throw out a lot less heat in your room
The Smith Posted June 19, 2009 Posted June 19, 2009 room temp is about 14C Umm considering this low room temperature, I am sure you would be more comfortable with a few GTX260s heating the room.
ir_cow Posted June 19, 2009 Posted June 19, 2009 (edited) i got a 260 clocked at 700/1026/1550 and its running at 65c. but than again i leave the fan on 100%. normal clocks and default fan settings will get you 76c when on load. and you normally can't hear it. Waco Posted June 19, 2009 Posted June 19, 2009 How much heat a video card puts out it directly related to how much power it consumes, nothing else.
Zertz Posted June 19, 2009 Posted June 19, 2009 How much heat a video card puts out it directly related to how much power it consumes, nothing else. Exactly, it has nothing to do with GPU temperature
PeeWee90 Posted June 19, 2009 Posted June 19, 2009 atm mine's idle at about 40C on the GPU with the fan on 40% and room temp is about 14C You must wear a jacket when sitting at your computer? (14C = 57.2F) Anyway, if you want a cool and quiet card so bad, consider buying a seperate cooler for whatever card you end up buying, or buy one with a non-reference cooler fitted already.
