sirloganthestud Posted June 18, 2009 Posted June 18, 2009 So what do you think about the upcoming Intel Core i5s? Any worries or hopes? Any likes or dislikes? All comments are appreciated.
TheConqueror Posted June 18, 2009 Posted June 18, 2009 There aren't that many details yet, or solid benchmarks etc.
psycho_terror Posted June 18, 2009 Posted June 18, 2009 There aren't that many details yet, or solid benchmarks etc. IIRC we don't even know if it's going to be called i5.
sirloganthestud Posted June 18, 2009 Posted June 18, 2009 (edited) IIRC we don't even know if it's going to be called i5. Â True, but you get the idea. The processor line that might be i5. DLS2008 Posted June 18, 2009 Posted June 18, 2009 The top-of-the-line "i5" will probably be similar to the i7 920, but with less cache. It will probably perform well, but not as well as the 920s do.
Zertz Posted June 18, 2009 Posted June 18, 2009 True, but you get the idea. The processor line that might be i5. Â Intel announced the i7, i5 and i3 names yesterday, it is official. Â The chips are due for Q3, but i5 shouldn't be much slower than i7 clock-for-clock
sirloganthestud Posted June 18, 2009 Posted June 18, 2009 (edited) The top-of-the-line "i5" will probably be similar to the i7 920, but with less cache. Â Probably; I've even heard that they will replace the 920s. There are a couple of other differences. The i5s have an LGA 1160 socket; probably because Intel likes to mess with people. The other major difference is that they will use dual-channel memory architecture instead of tri-channel. But as you said, they will probably be very similar. Â Thanks Zertz! That's pretty cool! Where did you read this information? Intel? Â Also, do you know if the i3s will have a different socket than the i5s? Jump4h Posted June 18, 2009 Posted June 18, 2009 i7 - LGA 1366 i5 - LGA 1156 i3 - mPGA
pkilway Posted June 18, 2009 Posted June 18, 2009 (edited) Here's an article from Anandtech about the branding of the i5's and i3's. I haven't heard anything about an mPGA 989 platform, but think it would be a HORRIBLE idea for Intel to have three different sockets at once. Zertz Posted June 18, 2009 Posted June 18, 2009 Where did you read this information? Intel?  Late last night on Intel's blog  According to Hexus i7 - LGA1156 / LGA1366 / mPGA 989 i5 - LGA1156 / LGA1155 / mPGA 989 i3 - LGA1156 / mPGA 989 / LGA775  Intel's says it's less confusing <_<
sirloganthestud Posted June 19, 2009 Posted June 19, 2009 Why the heck does Intel have to make things so complicated? Why three different sockets? I'm sure that motherboard companies are paying Intel for this. That's just RIDICULOUS! TERRIBLE idea! :angry2:
Baulten Posted June 19, 2009 Posted June 19, 2009 It is pretty ridiculous. mPGA 989 is the mobile socket, so we can safely "ignore" that one. It still means Intel will have 2 mainstream sockets (1156 and 1366) with products that use both in the i7 segment. GOing to be very confusing.
