Ethenolas Posted June 15, 2009 Posted June 15, 2009 I have just built a new system...parts are on their way... Phenom II X4 955 CPU MSI 790FX-GD70 motherboard ATI Radeon 4890 Toxic Edition CORSAIR CMPSU-850TX powersupply 4GB Patriot Viper DDR3 2000mhz RAM ZALMAN CNPS9900LED 120mm heatsink HT Omega Claro 7.1 + sound card And I am debating what OS to put on it... I do a lot of tweaking...so I have had nothing but problems with Vista... But this was a while ago and maybe things have changed? Also Windows 7 seems to be available for download...any thoughts on this? How much performance would I be giving up by sticking with XP pro? Maybe Linux? If someone could give me a breakdown I would greatly appreciate it!
Verran Posted June 15, 2009 Posted June 15, 2009 Linux is great, as long as you don't really want to do very much. Either Vista64 or Win7 64. If you don't mind a few quirks from a beta OS, give Win7 a try. Otherwise, go Vista. They're pretty much the same either way, but one is free for the next year or so
Ethenolas Posted June 15, 2009 Posted June 15, 2009 Has the compatibility for Vista / Windows 7 gotten better? Would you consider it on par with XP pro? I run a lot of freeware...and random strange software for electronic firmware updates etc... I guess I can always keep my older pc for this... tkrow21 Posted June 15, 2009 Posted June 15, 2009 As far as 64bit goes, yes, Vista and 7 have much better driver support etc. 64bit support is much better on 7 and Vista.

JessicaD Posted June 19, 2009 Posted June 19, 2009 Ethenolas, Windows 7 RC is available for download and offers several new features. Because you are unfamiliar with the capabilities of this OS, it would be good to know that Microsoft does have a site with whitepapers, tutorials, walkthroughs and screen casts on all the
