Overclocking nood with simple question (i think)

To give you a straight answer no you would not need to overclock the memory, but when you change the base clock the memory speed will change. So you'll need to adjust the memory multi until it's at the correct speed. The timings you can leave alone, unless you want to push things as far as they can go of course.

EDIT: OMG I spelled straight wrong.

On X58 motherboards, the clock of your CPU isn't associated with your RAM. Is that right?

Nope changing BSCLK and nothing else will adjust the memory speed.

Slight change to BSCLK.

Memory changed as well.

Yes but i think these Corsair DOMINATOR 1600MHz 8-8-8-24 sticks once put in the mobo for the first time they default to 1066 9-9-9-24 so if i over clock the i7 920 to 3.0 ghz i can put them at 1600MHz 8-8-8-24 i think.

That would depend on how you overclocked it. If you keep the multi at 20 and only increase the FSB to 150, that would give you 3GHz. If your memory ratio is 5 (I believe it is at stock settings) then at that FSB your memory will be clocked at 1500MHz.

If you want your memory to run at the correct speeds without changing the multiplier or the ratio you'll need to increase your FSB to 160. This would put you at 3.2GHz.

You could also get close to 1600 at 3GHz by using a higher FSB lower multi and lower memory ratio. It all depends on you I guess.

However if you don't want to overclock your CPU you could set the memory ratio to 6, and bring yourself to the rated speeds at the stock settings.
