Crawlerz246 Posted June 13, 2009 Posted June 13, 2009 my DELL had a 320GB hdd that I almost filled up to the brim, so I bought a WD caviar black 640GB for use in this and later PC I assemble. one question comes up... I heard people say that it's good to have partitions and that the OS partition is better when there's nothing on it but OS. that may be true but! if, theoretically, that is said for when you have to reinstall OS, you wipe only that partion and you don't lose any installed apps on another partition... that doesn't work because REGISTRY will be wiped with the OS and the apps won' work anyway. am I right? in this sense, partitioning really doesn't work (do anything useful)! also, if I partition this new WD into D:\ and E:\ (C:\ is in the DELL already) then later, when I stick it into the new PC, one will get reformatted to C:\ anyway, right? for OS to be somewhere? so again - no go. please post any ideas you guys have, and tell me if I'm mistaken. ocre Posted June 13, 2009 Posted June 13, 2009 If you reinstall your os will usually be loads faster even if you dont delete/create a new the partition. I dont know of an OS being faster when its on its own partition, I never experienced that. Your correct if assuming that you just cant wipe the os partition and reinstall then all your previously installed programs work, THEY WON'T. There is benefits to having stuff stored on different partitions. You could keep all of your setup and installations one a separate partition, as well as pics, documents, movies, music then that would make it much easier to wipe the OS without having to back up those things. There are other uses. Its not entirely useless as you can take advantage of separate partitions. Its really what works for you. Its not gonna make things run better, but may save a little time if you reinstall your OS often.
Crawlerz246 Posted June 13, 2009 Posted June 13, 2009 I don't reinstall my OS often (if I can help it) - I did twice: once to downgrade to XP, and once because of a serious infection that spread to much before I could neutralize it. so as I understand it, FOR ME, there is no added benefit. thank you for clearing that up for me. dr_bowtie Posted June 13, 2009 Posted June 13, 2009 just for people to re-format alot having multiple partitions saves alot...you can have the Doc & settings loaded to the partition nad it lives there...if you need to reformat you just reload and point it back to there and it saves time..for normal users there is no sense to unless you want to use the extra storage for back ups which is a good idea... I split mine 200/396 with the OS on the 200 side and I install everything on that drive...back ups on the remainder....
Crawlerz246 Posted June 13, 2009 Posted June 13, 2009 I relatively recently bought myself a portable WD 1TB drive. so no more backup problems for me. saved my life. all my pictures, music, documents, save games amounted over the years, etc. are copied relatively fast. though things like the registry can't be copied... but it's alright I guess I'll manage... dr_bowtie Posted June 14, 2009 Posted June 14, 2009 you can save the registry...right click and save as....
Crawlerz246 Posted June 14, 2009 Posted June 14, 2009 you can save the registry...right click and save as.... while that may be true, it's not safe, methinks. even if, hypothetically, I install the same OS, registry errors will acumulate and it's probably better to just make a fresh start if it's a new PC. also I think I'll go with Windows 7 instead of Vista (which is e-ville!) Crawlerz246 Posted June 14, 2009 Posted June 14, 2009 Why did I never think of partitions for my OS.... so what if you partion your OS? what then? your registry will be wiped with it if you reinstall so apps won't work anyway (even if they're safe). no real benefit, just for some reason the russians love to partition, judging from their forum. I won't though. no real benefit.
