xPETEZx Posted June 10, 2009 Posted June 10, 2009 Hi Guys, If you have read my other topic Here! you will be aware that my current install on my main rig in sig, is buggered. I was asking for a place to get an XP SP3 ISO, well, I found one. I get access to MSDN AA through my university, and while looking, I found XP SP3 ISO on there, but I also found Vista x64 Enterprise edition. This brings up an interesting topic: Should I upgrade to Vista Enterprise or Stick with XP? I have been meaning to try out DX10 on Bioshock. But other than that, I really have no reason to upgrade.... Whats the general consensis? Is it worth going to Vista? Or better to stick with XP? I know this is probably a VERY bad idea, but I am able to "upgrade" my install of XP to Vista? Or do I have to do a fresh install? I plan to move to 7 around Xmas time. Verran Posted June 10, 2009 Posted June 10, 2009 I don't know the specific feature set of the "Enterprise" offerings, but I'd say the time to be afraid of Vista has passed. 64 is pretty much getting to be a "must" with memory getting so cheap and DX10 certainly doesn't hurt either. I've made the move to Vista on my main PC and I don't regret it.
tkrow21 Posted June 10, 2009 Posted June 10, 2009 DX10 in Bioshock won't really make a difference, but I would certainly recommend Vista for other reasons.
neddamttocs Posted June 10, 2009 Posted June 10, 2009 Enterprise is the same as Business but with the bit locker drive encryption. Personally i would go with vista.
hardnrg Posted June 10, 2009 Posted June 10, 2009 Just so you know... on MSDN:AA, each release of an OS (e.g. Vista Business, Vista Business with SP1, XP, XP SP1a, XP SP2, XP SP3) has a separate serial... since serials work the same for all service packs, you can essentially have multiple licenses for the latest service pack... 32 bit serials work on 64 bit, for the same Edition, e.g. Business->Business64 So, you can have 4 licenses for Vista Business SP1 integrated x64... upgrade to SP2 via Microsoft Update 4 licenses for XP SP2 or SP3 (I don't like SP3) etc etc 4GB of RAM is handy... using it, I mean

Like said windows Vista enterprise edition is the same thing as Vista Business except it has supports Bitlocker drive encryption, suppose to have some type of Unix support (I don't know the exact details), a different licensing policy when it comes to installing enterprise edition on virtual machines, and some type of program that is very similar to the Windows 7 XP mode. xPETEZx Posted June 11, 2009 Posted June 11, 2009 Thanks for all the replies. So far, it looks like Vista 64 is the way to go. However 2 people voted XP, but no-one has actually said stick with XP?
Zertz Posted June 12, 2009 Posted June 12, 2009 Vista. However, I think at this point it's better to just get Windows 7 RC and buy whichever version when it's released.
IVIYTH0S Posted June 27, 2009 Posted June 27, 2009 Vista. However, I think at this point it's better to just get Windows 7 RC and buy whichever version when it's released. I agree, Windows 7 is so flawless and even looks better being that way. and believe me, I love Vista and never had an issue ... not to mention it's cool to have the best free OS around
xPETEZx Posted June 28, 2009 Posted June 28, 2009 Thanks all for the responses! All up and running on 64-bit Vista now. No problems. Would be great to get media centre, but I dont think its possible. To everyone recomending moving to 7 RC, no thanks. If it where possible to simply move from RC to Retail when its out, fine. But since you cant, I dont fancy ANOTHER format in 4 mths time. I am assuming of course that it will be possible to move from Vista -> 7 without format.

dling Posted June 28, 2009 Posted June 28, 2009 Vista or Win7 are both better choices then XP. :thumbs-up:
