xPETEZx Posted June 6, 2009 Posted June 6, 2009 Hi Guys! As If I hadnt already had enough trouble with my main rig, it seems that XP has decided to chip in to the problem pot. As of yesterday, every time I shutdown my computer, and then later turn it back on again, windows claims the display driver is unsable, and reverts to 4-bit 640 x 480. If I then re-install the drivers for my GTX285, it will install, restart, and all is well. If I then power down, and startup again, same problem occurs. I have tried the following: Tried the GTX285 in another computer, with 185.85 drivers, no problems, works perfectly. Tried an 8600GT 256 in my main rig, shame problems occur. Tried 185.85 & 182.08 drivers. Both display the same behaviour. Both the GTX285 & the 8600GT work PERFECTLY in my second rig, with no problems whatsoever. I have used Driver Sweeper to clear off ANY remains of drivers numberous times, and then cleanly re-installed a fresh download of 185.85 drivers from nVidia's site. To no avail. The problem still persits. I have ran CCleaner and Spy bot S&D which both found no problems. ANY ideas? I dont fancy re-installing my gfx rivers EVERY time I boot up! Thanks! xPETEZx Posted June 6, 2009 Posted June 6, 2009 you could try to reinsall windows... I feared that response was coming. And its not an option. I will not be re-installing a new OS till 7 RTM. Cant be bothered with all the tweaking and reconfiguring to get the OS to a state I am happy with.

I had some problems with my card but only on my username...
xPETEZx Posted June 6, 2009 Posted June 6, 2009 It happens before I even log in. The log in page is already in 4-bit. If I select "update driver" and then point it to the location where the 185.85 drivers un-packed, it finds them and applies them, then restarts working fine. Reagnon Posted June 6, 2009 Posted June 6, 2009 Are the drivers starting when the computer starts up? you can check the list of programs that start @startup in windows defender.
tkrow21 Posted June 6, 2009 Posted June 6, 2009 Keeping your computer on isn't an option? Mine's been folding & gaming for 3 weeks straight. But besides that, I don't know how to help.
xPETEZx Posted June 6, 2009 Posted June 6, 2009 No driver does not start to begin with. I then have to either reinstall it, within device manager, go to "update driver", then it works after a reboot. If I stand by the computer, its fine, so I may just do that. Still not ideal
Zertz Posted June 6, 2009 Posted June 6, 2009 Install Windows 7 RC so you get used to it before RTM Otherwise, just put your computer to sleep instead, it doesn't draw much power
Water_Hazard Posted June 6, 2009 Posted June 6, 2009 Have you tried any other drivers? or a windows repair?
dr_bowtie Posted June 6, 2009 Posted June 6, 2009 un-install the drivers and re-boot....go in to your local drive and wipe the nvidia folder...(delete it) if you have had an ATI card delete the ATI folder as well....re-boot and reload the latest Nvidia driver.... installing a new driver over and older one can create an issue when switching cards... if the problem persist even after wiping the folder then I am afraid a repair is in order...although I wopuld recommend backing up your info and doing a full nuke & pave.... I know it takes alot of time but the time is general low compared to the time spent trying to fix an issue that wont go away easily.... xPETEZx Posted June 6, 2009 Posted June 6, 2009 Hmmm, may just move to 7 RC 2. Will see. Tried all provided tips so far (bar the nuke & pave ) to no avail. The strange thing is, this came completely out of noware. One day its working perfectly, the neXt its not. I didnt install anything, and no updates where applied. Really at a loss as to what cause all this.
