Police officer uses Taser on male student at High School

I'm not saying he shouldn't be punished but I believe it's not appropriate to take him to court and give him a criminal record which can damage the start of his adult life. I understand that there are a lot of spooled young brats out there nowadays and they need to be taught a lesson when they do something wrong instead of getting away with it. But if you push the punishments too hard you could end up doing the wrong thing instead of straitening him out you could turn him into a career criminal which will burden and cost society even more in the long run.

ahhhh I hear you.

Like I said before I was not there so its hard to really pick a side. For all we know the guy could have flippin out and even threatened the officer before the officer went to escort him to the office who flippin knows.

I agree.

I do not know the whole situation, Like I said I'm just basing my opinion off of what I read from the article.

Does anyone else here think the idea of "respect the law" is kind of silly? I mean obviously it is a good idea to have a government, laws, law enforcement, but you have to remember that not all laws are correct and the best way to correct the wrong laws is to disobey them, not saying this situation falls into that category, obviously the kid should have been in class and not roaming the halls talking on his cell but just the idea of respecting the law isn't always right.

Basically, if you shove/assault a police officer (going off the article) you deserve everything that's coming at you. To me, it sounds like the cop told the kid to get off the phone, the kid refused, the cop said, "you're coming with me" and grabbed the kid's arm, the kid resisted and pushed the officer off of him, the cop saw it as assault and wrestled the kid and finally pinned him with the taser. Sounds to me like the kid was lucky he didn't get the wrong end of a baton or a Glock.

Bottom line is, you do what a police officer says. If it's wrong, take him to court.

Someone once told me, "Don't scare the guy with the badge and gun." and it's sage advice.

I cant really see why the police officer would have got involved. The kid wasnt breaking any laws just school rules, well from what i read in the article, so it should really be up to the school to send him back to class.

the general rule for an officer is to use a tool that is one above what the aggressor is using.

Knife -> Gun

Gun -> Gun

Physical -> Baton

Physical -> Mace (pepper spray)

Minor Resistance -> Taser

I'd rather be maced than tasered.... i think you are forgetting how dangerous they are, a taser is one step down from a gun in my book.

Tazing is fine, kid needed it.

But giving the kid a FELONY is a bit harsh, I didn't read everything, but was the kid already convicted of the felony?

I think the judge will probably just assign him some community service and its a lesson learned.

Worst the kid should get a misdemeanor, a felony is way to excessive and will ruin a lot of opportunities for him in the future as well as perhaps encourage him to become a career criminal

I doubt felony charges will stick.

As a survivor of being maced and tasered. I would rather be maced. The other half tasered me when we were dating. (Long story. A stupid one. But a long story.) So I am a glutton for punishment. 80 thousand volts to the groin will drop anybody. So I carried a pair of oranges for a couple days. No problem.

I think this is totally wrong.

If you disagree with a law then you should become a part of the system and vote for new ones. This is the solution offered to you. Just because you don't agree with a law doesn't give you the right to disregard it. That a ridiculous idea. If you only had to follow the laws you personally agreed with the whole world would be anarchy.

Also, if you're saying you don't have to "respect the law" and meaning you that you don't have to agree with the written laws, then that's correct. You don't have to agree with them, and no one asked you to. But you do have to follow them. If you don't the consequences are well documented.

If when you say you don't have to "respect the law" means that you don't have to obey police officers, then you're totally wrong. They have the authority to hurt and/or arrest you if you don't listen to them. I'd love to see you stand in front of a judge and try to explain why you shouldn't be punished because you don't agree with the law :lol: "You see, your honor, I shoved the cop because he said I was breaking the law, but I think that law is wrong, sir." :lol:

The kid was in the hall during class using a cellphone both things that should not be happening during school hours. Based on the story the kid did not listen to the officer so the officer grabbed him. Why do you think the police are in the schools anyhow. Its because the youth of this country do not know how to abide by its laws and show no respect for the police much less for themselves. They think the rules don't apply to them and scream foul when they are in an altercation due to the litigious society we live in. IF this kid was 18 or 19 then he is a man that is responsible for his actions not a child. If he is 19 he was held back at least once so he is probably not the brightest bulb in the socket. The bottom line is we are reacting to a news story and have no idea what really went on.

The kid was wrong A) not being in class B) using the cellphone on school grounds C) not following the direction of a police officer

IF you argue the point that it was an emergency how did he fin out? Refer to point B

I'm surprsied nobody has brought up the fact that why do children need cell phones at school in the first place?

Some schools ban cell phones.

My friend's wife is a high school teacher and the garbage that goes on today by these children is amazing.

I applaud the police officer, about time some of these kids were taught a lesson.
