PSU for Crossfire 4870 512MB, Core i7 920, 6 GB RAM

Recommended Posts

Hello. I am planning to purchase a computer from either ibuypower.com or cyberpowerpc.com and I would like some advice on the PSU that I should get.

I am looking at the Corsair CMPSU-750TX. I am planning to get the Radeon HD4870 512MB card, a Core i7 920, and 6GB of Corsair RAM, but I would like a PSU that will be ready for dual HD4870's in the future. Is 750W enough for all of that, and if so, is the Corsair my best bet? Also, I noticed the Corsair has 4 6+2pin PCI-E connections where the HD870 requires 2 6pin connections? I am guessing that the 6+2 connection is compatible with the 6 pin?

Also, do any of you have experience or knowledge of those sites? I don't want to build my computer, but I do want a good-quality cost-efficient site to shop for one on; maybe there is a better site to do that? Thanks.

Thanks.

I prefer Newegg for computer parts and I recommend building your own.

The Corsair is good and so is PC Power and Cooling. 750W should be plenty. I have a 750W PC P&C Silencer running my Q9450 @ 3.6GHz, 4GB (2 x 2GB) RAM, 4870 1GB Crossfired, and 6 hard drives.

The 6+2 connections will work just fine with the 6 pins on the 4870s. It just has a 2 pin that can snap on the 6 pin to make it 8 pin. If you use it on the 6 pin 4870, you'll just have a little 2 pin piece hanging there, no big deal.

I prefer the PC Power & Cooling 750W personally (that's why I bought it :P), but either that or the Corsair are a great choice. They both are very highly reviewed power supplies.

The Corsair TX750W is a great power supply and will handle the 4870's with room to spare.

You're right about the 6+2 connectors they can be used as 6 or 8 pin.

Cheers

Paul

I cannot argue this point as I used the Corsair to power an I7 rig at 4.1 GHZ with dual GTX 260 216 sp cards with the CPU water cooled and did not have one hiccup

I've heard good things about the corsair but if you are set on buying your PC and not putting it together I suggest cyberpower. But seriously why not save yourself a few bucks put it together yourself and learn some new things about your computer.
