RaPiDo987 Posted June 4, 2009 Posted June 4, 2009 Hey guys... I have a Freeagent 500Gb external HDD 2.0 USB connection that I bought 2 years ago. I recently build my new comp and I was trying to back every thing up but some files wont copy. It states that there's a I/o something error with the file transfer... What the heck does that mean and how can I fix it? please help....
Nemo Posted June 4, 2009 Posted June 4, 2009 It's virtually impossible to tell without having a better description of the actual error message. Sometimes you can get a Delayed Write Failed error message when transferring files to a external USB drive. If that's the case, then turning off file caching can sometimes solve the problem. Check out this Microsoft KB article. In the meantime, please try to capture the actual error message and post back here in this thread. I drag the file from my external HDD to my desktop, every thing is well.... But then it gets stuck for a minute or so and then the error msg pops up. I tried extracting it with 7zip, winrar, magic iso and nothing works. Some files work but some files don't. My wife said my lil one drop it a couple of times last week While it was running Do you think that would be the reason why? Nemo Posted June 5, 2009 Posted June 5, 2009 Dropping a hard drive while it's running can certainly cause damage. Did you get any diagnostic software with the drive? If not, head over to Seagate's site and see if their Seatools will work on your version of the Freeagent drive you have. If the surface of the disk is damaged, running a surface scan may be able to mark the sectors as bad as allow to to finish your copying. RaPiDo987 Posted June 16, 2009 Posted June 16, 2009 So I decided to defrag the HDD and all I heard where clicks and more clicks... So does this mean my HDD is going to die soon?? Is there anyway to recover the files? Thanks
Jump4h Posted June 16, 2009 Posted June 16, 2009 Use a diagnostics program and check for errors. I use Tuneup Utilities 2009, its cheap and has alot of useful stuff.

Crazy_Nate Posted June 16, 2009 Posted June 16, 2009 Start backing your stuff up elsewhere...if it isn't dead yet, it will be.
