sirloganthestud Posted June 1, 2009 Posted June 1, 2009 Hello everyone! I have recently discovered that your can put a PCIe x1 card in a PCIe x16 slot. Do any of you have any personal experience in doing this? Have you had any problems or noticed any differences? Any stories are welcomed! IVIYTH0S Posted June 1, 2009 Posted June 1, 2009 Hello everyone! I have recently discovered that your can put a PCIe x1 card in a PCIe x16 slot. Do any of you have any personal experience in doing this? Have you had any problems or noticed any differences? Any stories are welcomed! did you actual run the card or just slip it in there? I guess if it works and you feel like running it there than I don't see any reason not to. I doubt if there will be any benefits since the hardware was put on the 1x PCI-E since it probably doesn't exceed the 1x PCI-E's bandwidth capabilities, but this may just be an educated guess. By all means go for it and see if there is any worthwhile benefits (over perhaps having the card in a better location?)
ir_cow Posted June 1, 2009 Posted June 1, 2009 (edited) only problem i ever heard of and it didn't happen to me is the first 16x slot is for video cards only on some boards. if you put anything else it won't boot, i put a raid card in the only 16x slot and it worked fine but every single thread i was reading said it shouldn't work with anything but a video card. other than that all PCIe cards are backword compliant meaning any 1x/4x/8x/16x can work upwords (even though there isn't 32x slot, but in theory). sirloganthestud Posted June 3, 2009 Posted June 3, 2009 I wasn't trying or planning on trying it, I was just wondering if there were any problems with it. Thanks for the help!
Waco Posted June 3, 2009 Posted June 3, 2009 Nope, there aren't any problems. PCI-Express cards will run in any slot you can stick them into at whatever the minimum speed between the card and the slot is.
