ir_cow Posted June 1, 2009 Posted June 1, 2009 i'm bored waiting for the rest of the folding rig to come, so i have this GTX 26 setting here, do you think it's a bad choice to open it up and clean + put As5 on? i was looking down the side of the card and could see it has thermal pads for the memory, do i have to replace that or can i just reuse them? ccokeman Posted June 1, 2009 Posted June 1, 2009 Re use the thermal pads and replace the tim with whatever you prefer. I do it every time I pull a card apart with no issues
ir_cow Posted June 2, 2009 Posted June 2, 2009 i was reading around you have to heat up the video card before pulling the heatsink off, is this true? or can i do it cold? also is the paste really really sticky like everyone is saying? slick2500 Posted June 2, 2009 Posted June 2, 2009 Heating the video card makes it easier to remove the cooler as the stock tim doesn't stick as much.
ir_cow Posted June 2, 2009 Posted June 2, 2009 but i can do it without heating it right? also do i have to put paste on the ram + the pads or just push the pads back on?
nVidia_Freak Posted June 2, 2009 Posted June 2, 2009 (edited) You don't have to use/heat the card up beforehand, but if you encounter excessive resistance from areas around the core or memory, it might be a good idea to warm it up a bit. No, you don't add any paste between the pads and memory. In fact, once you get the heat sink off, you'll see that the only thing in contact with the memory are the pads. ir_cow Posted June 2, 2009 Posted June 2, 2009 (edited) okay well for an update i did it. it took a reeally long time because i could not get the backplate off, once i did the front just about fell off expect for the 2 screws holding the heatsink on. oddly unlike everyone says the gpu tin came off like nothing, one swipe with rubbing alcohol and it all came off. so besides just about breaking the backplate off everything went fine, now to wait for the rest of the parts to come (might still work lol). everything rubbed off but the fan cord would not come out side of the card where i just about ripped it apart.
