XxHellxRaizerxX Posted May 31, 2009 Posted May 31, 2009 (edited) So as of now.. I'm still using the stock cooler which really isn't "too" bad. I'm at 3.5GHz at 1.408v (1.392 vdroop). Last night i tried to take it up to 3.6GHz, but I had to drastically increase the voltage to the point where my poor old cooler couldn't handle the heat (got to 62C rather quickly). Is this normal to require such a big voltage increase for only a 100MHz increase? I think the voltage was up to 1.44v when I stopped trying. I only increased the multiplier to x16 to get the approximate 3.6GHz so it shouldn't be the anything else. Here are some screens. Edit: I will be getting a new cooler soon. Most likely the XIGMATEK Dark Knight as soon as I get some cash. (I also need a case ) Edited May 31, 2009 by XxHellxRaizerxX
ocre Posted May 31, 2009 Posted May 31, 2009 (edited) yep. A lot of phenom2s go pretty high on stock or just a tad bit of increase in voltage. But then they almost kinda hit a wall where as you got to increase the volts dramatically to just get a bit further. I can get ~3.6 on very little volts but my wall is 3.8. I have to run 1.45 + volts to be stable and my cooler just cant handle it. So you can get past it with a lot of volts. I figure my chip will top out on air at 3.9 somewhere with 1.55volts but i really dont see the point. I am kinda a low volt overclocker, always have been. I figure i will take whats free but i dont really push my home rig to hard! http://valid.canardpc.com/show_oc.php?id=575564 Edited May 31, 2009 by ocre
ocre Posted May 31, 2009 Posted May 31, 2009 (edited) my volts didnt show up there. http://www.flickr.com/photos/38437019@N08/...428025/sizes/l/ 1.3875 volts 3710mhz what i am saying is after that i got to add some big volts likt by 3.8 i got to add 1.45 to be stable. and its slower from that point Edited May 31, 2009 by ocre
Guest ajmatson Posted May 31, 2009 Posted May 31, 2009 Get a better cooler and pump that thing up. The Phenom II 940 can take up to 1.5 volts with not problems if you have the right cooling solution. I had it up to 3.99GHz at 1.5v with a CoolIT Domino A.L.C. under 60C degrees
