Fl1pmode Posted May 31, 2009 Posted May 31, 2009 I have pretty much finalized what I would like to purchase for my new computer (not including the monitor or the DVD drive but suggestions would be welcome, 20" for monitor) and would like the opinions on the following parts: COOLER MASTER RC-690-KKN1-GP - $75 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16811119137 CORSAIR CMPSU-650TX 650W - $95 - 650 Watts enough to power the pc including the overclock? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16817139005 EVGA 896-P3-1255-AR GeForce GTX 260 Core 216 - $240 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16814130434 OCZ Special Ops Urban Elite 4GB - $69 - I hope to picked the correct DDR3 dual channel modules http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16820227324 AMD Phenom II X4 940 - $190 - How well would this one overclock compared to 955 and would the extra cost justify the switch? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...enom%20II%20940 ASUS M4A78T-E - $140 - Would the Xigmatek cooler fit onto this board? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16813131366 XIGMATEK HDT-S1283 120mm Rifle CPU Cooler - $39 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16835233003 Microsoft Comfort Curve 2000 B2L-00047 Black - $22 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16823109156 Western Digital Caviar Black WD5001AALS 500GB - $70 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16822136320 Thank you in advance
The Smith Posted May 31, 2009 Posted May 31, 2009 (edited) The PII X4 940 does not support DDR3 unfortunately. It's an AM2+ processor only. So either you get the PII X4 945 or 955, or you ditch your mobo and DDR3 and go the DDR2 route. Good luck Edited May 31, 2009 by The Smith

maj0rgamer Posted May 31, 2009 Posted May 31, 2009 (edited) if you like to play the latest games and want the system to last longer doing so, and if you can afford it, the ddr3 route is probably the best... the ddr3 setup should also be much more upgradeable, seeing as ddr2 hardware (am2+ for example) is probably not going to be made anymore as ddr3 is probably going to be taking over soon as it looks to already be doing so (technology going backwards isn't very likely ). look at the ddr era for example... what is left of it in the enthusiast community? basically if you want cheaper and something to go with for now and aren't worried about any possible future upgrades, then ddr2... if you want somewhat better performance now but want to be able to upgrade later (atleast with more options), then perhaps go the ddr3 route. as far as right now goes, a ddr2 system with a phenom ll 940 is probably going to smoke most anything thrown at it (and probably will for a long time)... but later if you can upgrade, it's basically back to the drawing board with a ddr2 system this late in the ddr2 stage. edit: also, on the ddr3 memory... shouldn't 6gb be used seeing as it runs in triple channel? what about these or these? wouldn't worry about that cpu cooler not fitting on that motherboard, it should be just fine... and that power supply should be just fine to power the rig with just one gtx 260, overclocked and stuff (that all could get really technical, but 650 watts should be more than enough... corsair has a power supply recommendation thing on their website here... the memory finder thing may help you out as well). but if you wish to add more to it later on, it may be worth it to get something with a little more power... again, that depends on whether you plan ahead or not. To quote your name, I am a major gamer so longetivity is important The AM3 motherboard I am hoping to buy supports dual channel DD3 memory, not triple channel. Hence the RAM I linked which hopefully will be enough.

Uhm....what about this ram http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16820227254 its free shipping which will save you, and its ddr3 1800 with the same timings as the 1600. Anyways it will be cheaper and you should be able to run the timing tighter if you underclock the ram to say ddr 14?? or whatever you decide. Also it really pays to go with the free shipping and combos because let me tell you it can save you a lot more then you would think. I can save 60 to 100$ on every system i build in that way. Takes a little time but sometimes you can end up woth way better stuff for less

TheConqueror Posted May 31, 2009 Posted May 31, 2009 The Difference in Dual/Tripple channel is not based on the motherboard, it is based on the processor. AMD has chosen a dual channel memory controller for DDR3 (for now). So that won't change unless they make a new CPU with a triple channel memory controller
maj0rgamer Posted May 31, 2009 Posted May 31, 2009 (edited) in that case, why not just grab a 955 instead of the 940 cpu and be done with it? have fun! Edited May 31, 2009 by Maj0r Gamer
