miles12 Posted May 30, 2009 Posted May 30, 2009 So, I'm thinking of building a new computer within the next month or so, and I was wondering if you could look over my specs and give any sort of feedback. This is what I have so far: 218.99 - CASE - COOLERMASTER ATCS 840 (http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811119187) 354.99 - CPU - i7 920 (http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115202) 349.99 - MOBO - ASUS P6T Deluxe v2(http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131365) 79.99 - HEATSINK - Noctua NH-U12P (http://ncix.com/products/?sku=35245&vpn=NH-U12P%20SE1366&manufacture=Noctua) 264.99 - PSU - Corsair HX 1000W (http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139007&Tpk=HX1000) 344.99 - GPU - EVGA GTX 275 (http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130479) 229.99 - RAM - 6GB mushkin Redline (http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820226050) 30.00 - 2 CASE FANS - Scythe Unltra Kaze 2000RPM (http://ncix.com/products/?sku=26743&vpn=DFS123812-2000&manufacture=Scythe) I know someone will rage at my choice of PSU, but I honestly can't find anything that's >750W and modular. That's the one thing that I absolutely need; a modular PSU. (Note: I'm not willing to spend >$350 on a PSU. The one I've chosen comes out to about $310 with tax) Any kind of feedback would be appreciated
Reagnon Posted May 30, 2009 Posted May 30, 2009 (edited) Looks solid. Just the psu is abselutely overkill unless you want to do a big upgrade in the future. If you want it to stay your psu for many years it's ok. 750W would fit better with te package even if you ad a better gpu in to it with the saved money. You will only need an 750W to overclock and not having your psu under full load. (This will improve efficiency and often also life span)If this is not the case a 650w would be cheaper and also more than enough. A modular 750W power supply from thermaltake can be found at newweg for 149$ here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16817153038 Edited May 30, 2009 by Reagnon
Zertz Posted May 30, 2009 Posted May 30, 2009 That might just be what you're looking for: Corsair HX750/
9KRacing Posted May 30, 2009 Posted May 30, 2009 TBH the HX620 would be fine for that build. With a single HDD and a single GPU even 750w is way overkill. I'm guessing that rig at PEAK needs 400w. 1000w is just a complete waste of money unless you're going triple SLI, adding 4 more HDDs, water cooling, a few more case fans, cold cathodes, etc.
paulktreg Posted May 30, 2009 Posted May 30, 2009 Having looked over a few reviews that give power usage figures the system you have in mind will probably draw something along the lines of 200W idle and 400W with the graphics card driven hard with something like Crysis. The power supply you fit depends really on what you mainly do with the PC and whether you want to save a few dollars: 1. You don't care and you want the Corsair HX1000W then I say go for it, it's a great power supply. You can never overkill on power supplies in my opinion. 2. If you don't game much and spend much more time with Office applications and on the Internet then a good quality 500~600W unit will be more than adequate. 3. If you are an heavy gamer then something like the Corsair HX750W or HX850W is probably the sensible option. They will run at approximately half there rated output and give best efficiency. Hope this helps Cheers Paul
