Imp Posted January 2, 2004 Posted January 2, 2004 Hey I'm an overclocking noob haha...but this is whut I wanna do I'm gonna get a P4 2.8C Ghz computer... da reason why I got that instead of the 3.0C because I wanna overclock it...to get it to 3ghz, if possible 3.2 will be even better!! What do I do? This is the specs P4 2.8C Antac Sonata Case 380W Ram - 1GB (dunnno da brand) PC3200 Motherboard - Asus P4P800 (non-deluxe version) I just know that to increase the speed...u gotta overclock the FSB... da starting point is usually 200 right? to overclock to 3ghz, I have to increase it to 250 (since every 1mhz increase, the FSB increase 4mhz)...lock the 33.33/66.66 thingy...and possibly change the ram ratio (I'm not sure how the ram ratio thingy work) - what ratio to use? all I'm hearing is 1:1, 3:2, 5:4 to overclock to 3.2ghz, it would be da samething...but to move it to 300FSB instead... am I right on this? I need a little bit on the ram ration thingy thanks!
Eva_Unit_0 Posted January 2, 2004 Posted January 2, 2004 Okay, some of your info is off by a little...I'll just make some comments. 1. Yes, your fsb will start at 200. You'll increase from there. 2. For every 1 mhz you increase your fsb, your core clock will increase by your multiplier. 2800/200=14. So every 1mhz of fsb increase will raise your overall clock by 14mhz. To get 3ghz you would have to run your fsb at 214mhz. 214 x 14 = 2996mhz. If you were to raise the fsb to 250, you would be running at 3500mhz...BAD idea at this point in time. 3. Yes, you would want to make sure the agp/pci clocks are locked. That mobo may do it automatically...I don't know, I'm an amd user. 4. You may want to get some faster ram since pc3200 will be running at max speed right off the bat. To avoid having to use the dividers right away, you should get at least some pc3500 or so. The dividers are just a simple ratio. (with the fsb of course being the larger one) 1:1 is obviously where the fsb and the ram speed are the same. Let's say your fsb is at 200. Using a 3:2 ratio your ram would run at (2/3)(200) = 133mhz. Using a 5:4 would be (4/5)(200) = 160mhz...see how it works? You just use whichever ratio is required to get you as close to the max ram speed without going over. As soon as you go past the max speed of the ram, just move to the next one. Hope this helps! Feel free to ask for any elaboration on this stuff.
Guest Ballz2TheWallz Posted January 2, 2004 Posted January 2, 2004 umm if you got good air cooling a 2.8C can take you 3.6ghz on average(like extreme air cooling with a SP-94 and vantec tornado) edit:3.4-3.6ghz if you cant hit 3.2ghz with good air you got a screwed cpu(some can take a 2.8C to 3.2C on stock cooling)
nic anelka Posted January 2, 2004 Posted January 2, 2004 So I should be fine with my current rig to reach 3.2? More than enough air cooling I would have thought. I guess I could do with faster RAM...pc3500?
Guest Ballz2TheWallz Posted January 2, 2004 Posted January 2, 2004 well dont use stock i would recomend that just get a zalman cooler should do you good unless you want extreme air cooling. the zalman http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc....y=BROWSE&depa=1 the sp-94 (worning use of this with a vantec tornado will drive you deaf) http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc....y=BROWSE&depa=1 tornado http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc....y=BROWSE&depa=1 theremoflow slightly louder at lowest setting 40 db at highest http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc....y=BROWSE&depa=1 vantec stealth(also good but quiet) http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc....y=BROWSE&depa=
nic anelka Posted January 2, 2004 Posted January 2, 2004 Thanks B, Im not too concerned about noise, what with that thermaltake's 7 fans I'll check out those coolers you listed. Would you advise on getting a better PSU too?
anthony Posted January 2, 2004 Posted January 2, 2004 ok for oc'ing a p4p800.. dont wory about all that stuff.. its has presets!! 5-30 percent~~ you do no thave to do it manually!! wach the temps though...
GTSticky Posted January 2, 2004 Posted January 2, 2004 Your PS should be ok, unless it isn't. It's pretty easy to tell as a bad PS causes all kinds of fun problems. Consider other coolers, the Volcano is a loud POS, also try OC'ing before you replace your RAM. I've got PC3200 running faster than spec just fine, yours might do the same. The Zalman 7000 Copper CPU Cooler is a great compromise between quiet and coolness, the Aero7+ is ok as well and there are plenty of others and articles which review them. nic anelka Posted January 2, 2004 Posted January 2, 2004 'presets'? There's something called 'Dynamic Overclocking' I've seen disabled in the bios. But what do you mean by not having to 'do it manually'?
anthony Posted January 2, 2004 Posted January 2, 2004 presets as in.. ther is a menue for oc'ing.. wehn you get there you can choose how much you wana oc.. like 5-30 percent oc'ed.. you do no thave to wory about the FSB.. anything.. thats why i gota p4p800:D
nic anelka Posted January 2, 2004 Posted January 2, 2004 Sorry if Im slow on the uptake, but what 'menu'? I haven't seen anything that lets me o/c in percentages...
anthony Posted January 2, 2004 Posted January 2, 2004 thats why i like p4p800. you do not have to wory about the settings. just choose how much you wnat to oc. but if you want to do it the hard way. you can change it to manual. do some reasearch on the p4p800.. it wil explain to you
