RoysterGTX Posted May 26, 2009 Posted May 26, 2009 (edited) hey guys!! I have one hot gpu here. It is SAPPHIR Radeon HD 4830. Idle at 100c!! load at 120c +. need help. Fan is running. installed correctly. same temp in closed case or open case. Thanks! maj0rgamer Posted May 26, 2009 Posted May 26, 2009 (edited) if you don't have it, you should download evga precision... yes it works for other cards (edit: nvidia, see below) besides evga. is this card at stock settings? assuming it is for now. what should probably be done here is to increase the fan speed until the temps come down (and they should)... definitely ignore the overclocking stuff on evga precision, atleast until getting those temps under control. what kind of case is this graphics card in? what kind of cooling is in the case? those temps are extremely high and the card should not be used at those temps! please try adjusting the fan speed with evga precision and answer the cooling questions, and post back. Reagnon Posted May 26, 2009 Posted May 26, 2009 that is way to hot! was it running this hot wen you bought it?? if you hav'nt been playing with the heatsink i dont know what could be wrong. the standard 4850 is idling@ ~
Crazy_Nate Posted May 26, 2009 Posted May 26, 2009 (edited) Just a hunch...but I'm going to say that EVGA Precision isn't going to work with an ATI card. I'd try ATITool or Rivatuner. Override your fan settings, and run it at 100%. You can use the built in artifact / stress tool to check your load temperatures. If it's still running very hot, and you have some TIM lying around, I'd take the cooler off, look at how good of contact it was making with the core / memory, and then reseat it. If that doesn't work, you can try an aftermarket cooler as a last resort (maybe even after calling the manufacturer!). Good luck! wevsspot Posted May 26, 2009 Posted May 26, 2009 The EVGA Precision application is designed for nVidia cards, not ATi cards. Crazy is pointing you in the right direction for ATi compatible utilities. Depending on the mfg. of the card and whether it is still under warranty (which I assume it is) - you should probably contact the seller or mfg. before removing the factory heatsink. This may void the warranty (although if you were careful you could do it and they'd never know).

The case has one intake(80mm) fan on front and one exhause(120mm) on back. but i dont think the case should be the problem with this card. maj0rgamer Posted May 26, 2009 Posted May 26, 2009 (edited) sorry, wasn't thinking correctly when recommending evga precision for an ati card (nvidia guy here)... however, it will work on nvidia branded cards other than evga very well for any future reference or for those interested in an excellent overclocking tool and fan control program for nvidia cards. crazy_nate has indeed corrected the mistake and his advice should be followed here... be careful removing the heatsink though as it may void warranty (assuming the card is still under warranty... if not, then perhaps this should be done anyway). if you increase the fan speed, it should keep the card much cooler. also keep in mind that ati cards seem to run quite hot, and are probably designed with the enthusiast case in mind (with numerous case fans)... which was the reasoning behind asking about the case (if you use an antec 900 case personally, this should be readily apparent to you actually). if it's a standard case from dell, gateway, etc. you may need to purchase an aftermarket gpu cooler to keep it cool if the increase in stock fan speed doesn't work out... if you follow the links crazy_nate provided, you should be able to increase the fan speed and keep it quite a bit cooler. what is the ambient temperature (room temperature) of the room the computer is in when in use? also, as suggested above, you should perhaps call the manufacturer and discuss the problem with them... perhaps they can offer some advice or correct the problem with a replacement if it's still under warranty. ertxz18 Posted May 27, 2009 Posted May 27, 2009 DAMN!!! I recommend buying a new cooler for your GPU there.
Reagnon Posted May 27, 2009 Posted May 27, 2009 no, i didnt overclock it. everything on stock settings. Have you been playing with the heatsink? or was it this hot wen you bought it?
werty316 Posted May 27, 2009 Posted May 27, 2009 Did it always run at those temps? If so I suggest you apply some new/better TIM.
malmsteenisgod Posted May 27, 2009 Posted May 27, 2009 There's no way the fan is running at a decent speed if you're getting those temperatures. I'm assuming you're using CCC to get these temperatures, right? What's your fan speed set to? I keep my 4850 at 50% speed when I'm not playing a game and it idles at 50C. You must not have your fan higher than 20% or something if you're getting that temperature.
