He guys..... With summer rolling around i feel like upgrading my amd proc. The question is though the 940 or the 955. It doesn't matter to me about the 955's am3 or ddr3. I know the 955 has better performance but i guess the question is whether or not that is offset by the 940's tendency to clock higher. The 940 is also cheaper. but if the 955 is still a superior proc I'll upgrade to that and through on a good cooler. any opinion appreciated.

Well iam getting the 955 for what ive seen on utube it was clocked over 6ghz fair enough they where crazy as in useing extream cooling methods... but it can be over clocked easy over 4ghz without breaking a sweat... when fan cooled as far as ive seen on the net anyway..., i have the 810's that iam giving 2 a friend because they will bottle neck my system so the 955's are the 1's iam going for?... all the best btw...

If the ram didnt matter to you then I would get the 940. I ended up getting the 720 just so i could have am3/ddr3 system and was gonna wait for a better cpu or better price on the 955. The 955 just isnt much over the 940 and it is a shame you cant use it in an AM3 socket. That was a big deal to me so I went with the budget chip until later And now i am really lucky i did because with the asrock am3 my 720 unlocks 4 cores and clocks at 3.4g on stock volts. But really all that was important to me was getting an am3 rig set up. That was the reason i got the 720, I thought the 955 wasnt worth all that compared to the other phenom 2s and i just thought i could save some money until something a wanted or a real fair price came out. So I wouldve went 940>955 if i had to but the ddr3/am3 was my decision maker

Go with the 955. That way, when you DO decide to go AM3, you can just upgrade board and processor. I was impatient and got a 940 when the launched and now I'm going to have to buy a whole new CPU, Mobo, and RAM when I decide to upgrade.

Plus, 955s have better memory controllers and clock higher than 940s.

I know about the upgrade capability of the am3 chip... but i mean strictly performance wise which one is better? I know the 955 gives better stats at = frequency to the 940 but the 940 tends to have more o.c headroom.... which one is better in that regard?

strictly performance I think 955 might be a little better since the memory controller is improved. But if DDR2 I would go with 940 since it can OC higher, generally. We don't really have a lot of info since it is relatively new, In a month everything should clear up

I don't think the 940 generally clocks higher. It might see, on average, a higher percent OC, but I'm confident that the 955 hits overall higher frequencies more often. They're newer chips, so it's safe to assume AMD's 45 nm process has improved since initial production of 940s started.

For a little math, let's assume you buy a 940 and 955 that both overclock to 3.8 GHz. The 955 would be seeing a 18.75% overclock, whereas the 940 would be seeing a 26.67% OC. So, you could say that the 940 has more headroom, but ultimately, you're going to see similar final clocks. I've heard of (an experienced personally) most 940s clocking to 3.6 to 3.7 stable. Seems like 955s are hitting 3.8 pretty consistently.
