I know this threads has been done 1000 times, but with new members (from DIY and new signups in general) I'd like to know what your favorites are.

Obviously there is a lot of crosstalk between mangas, TV series and OVAs but I'd like to keep this thread primarily video related.

Here is a pretty decent manner in which we can post our favorite anime.

You do not have to follow the below guidelines, I just figured it would make searching the thread easier.

I borrowed this from another site: (http://www.animenfo.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=1945)

Format:

#. Anime - genre - brief remark.

  • Legend:
  • #. = the rank of the anime in your top numbered list. (easier to type it all out and use the numbered list)
  • Anime = underlined title of the anime
  • genre = the two to three prominent genre seen in the anime
  • brief remark = One or two sentences of your personal thoughts/opinions.

Example:

  1. Noir - Action/Drama - I fun series for all ages ^_o
  2. Trigun - Action/Comedy/Drama - Vash rocks. He is god!

Genre List:

Action:

Thrilling action-packed stories for example high-speed car chases, fierce battles, people running around a lot, and gun-shooting.

Adventure:

Daring tales of people having adventures, journeying to far off and exotic places.

Comedy:

This genre tends to make you laugh. However absurd and insider jokes will sometimes just confuse you.

Drama:

Anime with emotional and dramatic story, conveys a wide range of emotion.

Ecchi:

Ecchi anime contains very light sexual themes, such as sexual comedy, transvestites, lecherous grandparents, the occasional bare breast, but never any actual .. Lots of nosebleeds and potty humor.

Fantasy:

Many anime creators draw ideas from the folklore and mythology of many different cultures, using everything from unicorns to umbrella monsters, from the great cosmic sea turtle to Santa Claus.

Horror:

Creepy tales of ghosts, demons, vengeful ex-girlfriends and other frightening creatures.

Irrational:

Deviant, sometimes to the point of absurdity.

Magic:

Evil sorcerers bent on world conquest, fairies from another world seeking the magic gems to save humanity, flying unicorns, enchanted swords, there's magic on the air.

Martial Arts:

Anime that falls into this category has a lot of bare hand fightings, from normal kicking and punching to awesome finishing moves.

Mecha:

From fifty-foot robots to form-fitting battlesuits with high heels, anime is probably best known in the western world for mecha.

Mystery:

Cops, private detectives, and troubleshooters searching for the clues to solve the great puzzles. Lots of intrigue and conspiracy.

Parody:

As a well-established field, anime has earned its share of parody. From titles which parody the common themes to titles which use well-known anime characters from other titles in humorous guest cameos.

Romance:

Romantic stories drawn from the close and sometimes intimate relationships amongst two, three, or more characters.

SoL (Slice of Life):

A story representing a small portion of one person's life. Normally, this person is the only POV during the show.

Science-Fiction:

From the whimsical adventures of a boy and his robot to the dramatic plight of a race of cyborg slaves, science fiction plays a common role in anime.

Sports:

This genre conveys a wide range of sports from traditional martial arts like judo to western style sports like baseball or even fictional sports.

Super Power:

Be it an ancient greek Hercules, a cybernetic muscle-man, or a fourteen year-old girl in a mini-skirted sailor suit. As long as they have super power, they're in the show.

EDIT:

and just for the hell of it I'll throw in a poll...

:/

Yea, I had a lot of free time. Life was so much simpler when all you thought about when was dinner. Now not so much. It's when do I make dinner :(. I miss the good old days of not having to worry about anything. Don't take my ratings seriously I would never rate these, but to fit this format I did. I seen quite a few other series, but I honestly can't remember them all due watching them long ago.

01. Princess Mononoke - Action/Adventure/Fantasy - The first anime movie I fell in love with and could watch over and over.

02. Soul Eater - Action/Fantasy - My favorite series. Action and art style go hand in hand in this anime.

03. Naruto - Action/Adventure/Comedy/Magic/Martial Arts - A long lasting favorite. Though a lot of fillers.

04. Bleach - Action/Martial Arts - Another long lasting favorite. Also a lot of fillers.

05. Ohran Koko Host Club - Comedy/Drama/Love-Romance/School Life - A good comedy series. Also be aware of homoerotic twin brothers, but it's an act. But still very very strange to watch as they do their skit every episode.

06. Druaga no Tou (Tower of Druaga) - Adventure/Fantasy/Game - Kind of setup like an RPG game, but really enjoyable. Some funny scenes like the Roper dance.

07. Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuutsu (The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi) - Comedy/Fantasy/Light Novel/Novel/School Life - A good comedy with wacky plots and characters.

08. Fullmetal Alchemist - Action/Adventure/Comedy/Magic - If you like magic and comedy this is a good one. They are current redoing the series over to follow more of the original story. So check it out named Fullmetal Alchemist - The Brotherhood

09. Gundam SEED and Gundam SEED Destiny - Action/Mecha/Science-Fiction - The first Gundam series I've ever watched and enjoyed the story and fight scenes. Warning a lot of male characters crying/ but it's part of a Japanese thing. Please don't let that discourage you from watching these two seasons

10. Full Metal Panic!/ Full Metal Panic? Fumoffu!/ Full Metal Panic! The Second Raid - Action/Comedy/Mecha/Schoolkids - A great action/comedy series

11. Samurai Champloo - Action/Historical Settings - A very good action series. A lot of good fighting scenes.

12. Rurouni Kenshin - Action/Drama/Historical Settings/Love-Romance - Probably the first anime I saw that wasn't dubbed in English. Story about an assassin. Also has a TV Show series which was enjoyable (more comedy than seriousness like the OVAs)

13. Spirited Away - Family/Fantasy - Another great fantasy anime done by Studio Ghibli.

14. Trigun - Action/Comedy/Science-Fiction - As Andrewr05 said "Vash Rocks."

15. Eureka Seven - Mecha/Science-Fiction - Amazing art design by Bones studios, another favorite.

16. Baccano! - Action/Historical Settings/Light Novel/Novel - One word "immortals."

17. Bamboo Blade - Comedy/School Life/Sports - Who knew being in a Kendo Club could be so interesting.

18. Seirei no Moribito - Adventure/Fantasy/Light Novel/Novel - Amazing fight scenes.

19. Kekkaishi - Action/Family - A good magic and action series. A typical plot of the main character going from a loser to a winner. Capturing and vexing demons. Pretty blue and green colored boxes if you like geometry.

20. Samurai 7 - Historical Settings/Science-Fiction - Samurai 7 is based on Kurosawa Akira's famous movie/ "Seven Samurai". Same plot, but very different in style of presentation and setting.

21. Claymore - Adventure/Fantasy - A very good action series.

22. Bounen no Xamdou (Xam'd: Lost Memories) - Action/Fantasy - I loved it, reminded me a lot of Eureka Seven. Made by the same Bones Studio.

23. Sword of the Stranger - Action/Historical Settings - Another good samurai action movie.

24. Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade - Action/Drama/Science-Fiction - Reminds me of the helmets German soldiers wore in WW2 and the Hellgaust in Killzone games.

25. Hellsing - Action/Adventure/Horror - Not the classic Hellsing from the movie, but he still killing vampires :D.

26. Lovely Complex - Comedy/Love-Romance/School Life - An excellent romance/comedy combo. A tall girl falls for a short guy.

I think if I could choose one anime above all the rest (and of course it makes it easier to say since it still hasn't ended, going 400 episodes strong)

One Piece

It's just such an amazing adventure and so much creativity, I really love nearly all the anime I watch and some may have been my favorites during the periods I'm watching them but I usually demote them once the series ends.

a close second would be Gurren Lagann (which I just finished) because that show just blew my mind, it's shows like One Piece and Gurren Lagann that make the anime world worth experiencing

01. Fullmetal Alchemist - Action/Adventure/Comedy/Magic - its funny as hell, theres explosions and ed is bionic. oh and his brother is a tin can!

02. Naruto - Action/Adventure/Comedy/Magic/Martial Arts - awesome but like every thing thing American version sucks HARD goto hulu.com and watch it.

03. Eureka Seven - Mecha/Science-Fiction/Romance - the artist Kazuma Kondou (original artist ) is a god of manga, and the story is great!!

04. Bleach - Action/Martial Arts - swords.... need i say more?

i'm gonna put another by Kazuma Kondou even though its not anime but hey anyone whos still reading prolly reads manga lol

tied for second is deadman wonderland- action/adventure/drama/sci-fi/supernatural - Ganta Igarashi has been convicted of a crime that he hasn't committed, and sent to a new, privately owned and operated prison, where the inmates are the main attraction in a bloody carnival with all the poison candy death matches you could ever want.

good choices there, though I'll have to look into that deadman wonderland

Eureka Seven is definitely up there with me to, I just can't possibly make a list of faves though

I'm definitely an anime noob compared to you guys.

Naruto always seemed to be a little childish to me, then again I'm basing that comment on the English dubbed mainstream variant.

Bleach even dubbed is quite good, I've yet to see the Eng subbed versions however

Obviously a lot of the Gundams are good

Original Transformers are awesome as well, although I'm not sure if Transformers and stuff like thundercats are even classified as Anime?

Trigun obviously, although I've never finished that series.

I actually just recently (this year I think) found the time to finish watching Ergo Proxy.

It is definitely a unique anime.

Starts off awesome, has some really really slow moments, some deep philosophical areas (well, most of the latter half of the anime), neat super powered beings.

I can't really explain it, maybe I just didn't pay attention but I think I'd have to rewatch it in succession to completely get it...

Deadman wonderland is pretty cool. If you dont want something violent to much but a good story check out Ah, My Goddess.

Project ARMS is pretty cool also.

Not a huge anime fan, but my favorites were Ruroni Kenshin and most of the Gundam series'. Also was a fan of the older animes like Yu Yu Hakusho and the original DragonBall as well.

Have not gotten into or enjoyed anything recently.

You can't vote "No" without choosing an option below...you need to add "none".
Oops my bad, I knew I forgot something...

I never used to be a fan of it either because all I thought of when I heard of anime was DBZ and other over dubber Americanized crap.

That changed a few years ago though when i started watching the good stuff.

Its just ridiculous how many there are, I mean there is an anime EVERY genre for every person.

If you can overlook the language difference (also some people are stubborn and think something isn't worth watching if its not in English, I know many people like this) there is so many great animes...
