helpANoob Posted May 12, 2009 Posted May 12, 2009 I originally posted on another forum, but there doesn't seem to be any response from that one..Here it is... Hi all, I'm new to the forums and also a first time Intel builder. I'm not sure if anyone is aware, but if you work in the retail industry, there are special perks for sales employees of stores. One special is from Intel. They are having a promotion where an Intel Core i7 920 and an Intel DX58SO for $289 (w/o shipping I assume). This bundle comes with the following: * Intel
damian Posted May 12, 2009 Posted May 12, 2009 It's not a bad board, even for overclocking. http://www.legitreviews.com/article/962/7/
helpANoob Posted May 12, 2009 Posted May 12, 2009 That's the exact site I was looking at before posting. I was just hoping to get some users who have had first hand experience overclocking with the board. Besides the strange number of RAM slots and compatibility of the DDR3 1600, I think the board is good to go, but I want a second opinion. Thanks
uneedav8 Posted May 12, 2009 Posted May 12, 2009 If you are OK with the amount of RAM slots and PCI-E slots, I say go for it. With that price, you can't go wrong with an Intel board and processor.

The max amount of ram it holds is 16GB dual interleaved, but I think it's only 12GB triple channel. I think that is more than enough. According to this site, these are all the RAM sticks that have been tested to be compatible with this board. Anyone know of any guides to overclocking with this motherboard? Glow of fire Posted May 12, 2009 Posted May 12, 2009 Don't get the Smackover for $160. a P6t would best the smackover, and you will probably be more satisfied with the $80 extra you spend for it. If your choices are to spend $160 for a mediocre board, or $240 for a good board, the $80 should seem like a no-brainer. Kingfisher Posted May 12, 2009 Posted May 12, 2009 If you can swing that deal for $289 I'd say go for it. Even if the motherboard isn't the best, you are a new to the overclocking world and what better way to learn? Also, from what I understand, temps are an issue with I7's and would require water to acheive the high overclocks. You can't lose imo. Go buy it. According to newegg.com, the least expensive i7 compatible motherboard is $179 Comparison Link I see your point Glow of fire but I think the $169 actually is a fair price for the Intel board when considering the lack of certain features it has in comparison to the Asus. Buying the Intel board from this special program seems to be a steal since it is a bit under retail value even if it is a mediocre board. As long as I can manipulate it to do what I want, it should be a good deal. Kingfisher--I don't think I'm going to be overclocking too high to begin with so heat hopefully won't be an issue. I'll need to purchase an aftermarket cooler since the stock probably won't cut it. Water is probably overkill if I'm only looking for a decent overclock. Anyone have any experience with the Xigmatek Thor's Hammer? There's a review here. It's almost as good as the Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme. I want to get the Cogage, but I have yet to see any e-tailer stock it. Here's an article on it BTW..Thanks for your input guys

You are not going to overclock heavily so getting a "mediocre" motherboard is a good plan and since you are not a heavy overclocker you won't need the water cooling set-up. You can't lose.
