Ultimate or home premium

I am going to start my first build and I have come to the crossroads of which OS I should buy. Vista ultimate or home premium I have also been wondering if I should get xp pro, home edition or media center. Of these five which would you chose for easy overclockability and for a easy first build.

Thanks,

Home Premium is your best bet. Ultimate doesn't really provide much of an incentive to justify the extra cost to most users. With Home Premium you get access to a stable OS that has all the multimedia functions that Ultimate has, plus you get DirectX 10, which XP doesn't have. This is good if you're also a gamer.

As others have stated, Home Premium would probably be your best bang for the buck. Just keep in mind, Windows 7 which has seen a lot of love from testers will be released at the end of the year.

Save the money for Windows 7, and until then use the Evaluation copy which will be good for a year.

Seriously, avoid the abortion that is Vista.

Have you actually used Vista? Sure, it sucked when it was first released, but MS has improved the OS significantly since then.

As far as using Windows 7 Beta/RC until Windows 7 is released at the end of the year, that is simply a brilliant idea! After all, the automatic shutdown every two hours won't be a problem for users at all.

That automatic shutdown starts in March 2010, well after Windows 7 will have officially been released. The OP can use Windows 7 RC till it is released and then purchase the final version. It's actually quite the sensible solution.

Doh, you are correct. I misread the article... the beta starts the shutdowns in July this year... March 2010 for the RC. In that case, yeah, I would go with the RC until the official release.

Vista has gotten a lot more stable over the years since it has been released. I just installed SP2 on all my vista machines and it has made them a bit more quicker.

Although they do bring up a good point that it maybe a good idea to use the windows 7 RC because why buy vista know and then have to pay for a copy of windows 7 later this year (if you choose to upgrade to it).

As others have said, Home Premium is the better value for most users but, I can't see buying Vista at all at this stage of the game. But, if you've got a new system, you obviously need some kind of OS... If you're asking whether to go with Vista or XP, I'd go with Vista just because it has some more up-to-date features.
