RoadWarrior Posted May 7, 2009 Posted May 7, 2009 I will probably get flamed for this. If you have no criminal record, aren't a fat basturd and have some patience the military might be an option. My step son just got an MOS in film/editing that was almost impossible to get. But he stuck to his guns and told em he wasn't interested in anything else...low and behold a spot "opened" up. There are many jobs in the military that are not advertised and some that even the recruiters don't know about. Almost anything you can think of in the civilian world needs to be done in the military as well. The Army is probably your best bet, as the other branches are somewhat smaller. Where else can you go to school and get paid for it? Not to mention 100% medical. Maybe you could get in on the next "Americas Army". It is managed by the U.S. Army's Office of Economic and Manpower Analysis (OEMA) at the United States Military Academy, West Point, New York. I was a little more traditional and went 82nd Airborne, but it landed me a gig firefighting so was well worth it. Your Veterans Preference will go along way in getting you a job with many employers, especially in government agencies. The money for school and bonuses right now are insane, they are having a hard time finding people that aren't obese or just plain criminals. Our youth of today have an over abundance of both. Something to consider. The military of today is not the "dumb grunt" it used to be. Many of the technologies we are using to write in and view this forum were developed for/by the military. Although I agree, I don't agree with the whole "some jobs aren't advertised" and that "some recruiters don't know about." All jobs that you can go straight from basic to school and be that job, the recruiters know about it. Maybe not specifics, but they can read a sheet of paper. Straight up, they name the jobs to sound more interesting than they are. Yes, military is a great option...as for right now, at least for the Air Force, it's pretty difficult to get in. From people I have talked to, we are up to getting a 65 on the ASVAB and pretty much no criminal record / needing major waivers to get in. Other branches maybe not so much. With only a GED, it's going to be tough to do a whole lot, but getting college is going to help you out, be it civilian or military. Military is going to be your cheapest way, although not easiest. Kash Posted May 7, 2009 Posted May 7, 2009 I know what you mean about the military, hence why I'm considering Air Force JAG after I graduate law school. Good money and tons of experience, plus it looks fantastic on a resume
Verran Posted May 7, 2009 Posted May 7, 2009 This is just an FYI, but do you know how many people want to be "game developers"? Seriously, it's like the nerd version of wanting to be a pro athlete! Just keep that in mind, please. My brother looked into all those "game developer" "colleges" and they're all scams. Keep that in mind too. If you want to be a game developer, teach yourself a programming language. Once you've done that, teach yourself another. Then learn CAD. If you enjoy all that, then go to school for a programming degree.

If you enjoy all that, then go to school for a programming degree. Exactly! If you really want options I would recommend getting a Computer Science degree. There's so much selection course wise. At my university, you can mix it up with other compatible degrees, like CS and math, biology or stats. They also have a good amount of graphic courses, and in final year there is an innovative research course (program stuff like motion control or touch screen desks, etc.) and a game creation course. You can always start on learning Flash or Java (web) and create basic games, it's pretty popular. As well game companies want diverse employees now, so rather than having programmers and graphics separate, they're looking for individuals with the combo, at least that's what EA told us. Most game developers get going by experience, and knowing the right people. My buddy is going threw school for his degree but he is also working on networking with the studios nearby. Meeting people who are in the industry and knowing the right people is what its all about. He is going for his Art degree I think or something, he is a great artist but he lacks skills with a lot of the programs used to create concept art and game graphics in the industry, such as maya, 3dmax, mudbox, photoshop, etc..... Its all about building your portfolio too, start out with mod development kits and make your own mods for current games out there. Another thing too, don't settle on one career path, I would love to work in the gaming industry but I am also working on my degree in Business IT, so I will have that as well. I might even be able to get a job as an IT person in the gaming industry ya never know. You don't need to necessarily know how to make games to be in the industry, these companies still need the business backbone (Legal, Sales, Marketing, Accounting, Legal, etc). Kamikaze_Badger Posted May 9, 2009 Posted May 9, 2009 Why not go get your diploma? I looked at the GED route a few years back, before the economy became crap. It winds up being a Guaranteed Employment Dilemma, ESPECIALLY in today's economy. Look into options for getting a proper diploma, it'll look much better for employers. And if you're looking at going the military route, you won't get in with just a GED. Air Force, National Guard, and Coast Guard won't even look at you if that's all you have right now, and waivers for them are getting pretty sparse in the Marines, Army, and Navy. Right now people are flooding recruiting offices. some that even the recruiters don't know about. Any recruiter who wants to make mission will have no problem finding any job in the military related to what you want to do, no matter how far they have to stretch it. Overclocker16 Posted May 11, 2009 Posted May 11, 2009 (edited) Keeping on the military side... yes, right now trying to join the military is hard as it is. You can pretty much kiss your chance at the AF goodbye with a GED, we accept 60 maybe per YEAR, so take it at that. Not to mention you need around a 65 to even be considered by recruiters right now. As KB said, your best chance at landing something good is to get an actual HS diploma (how ever you do it, I don't know, I graduated because that's what is expected of people...but I won't keep going on that). However you do it, go. But as others have said, don't wish, make something happen. Otherwise, have fun working at McDonalds or wherever else is near you.
