VolcomPimp Posted December 31, 2003 Posted December 31, 2003 (edited) well it looks like Im about 2 venture into the unknown after a good few hours of sleep... Im about 2 try a new linux distro... woo hoo!!!! anyone here used Arch Linux??? Ive been using slack on my laptop trying to get my orinoco card drivers working so I can start scanning networks but I pretty much screwed up my drivers all together and decided 2 try debian which didnt go 2 well for my first time..... Anyway here's what I know so far.... fits on 1 cd.... good times! not for newbies.... good times if I can get it workin.... geared towards ppl who want to make custom packages... w00t!!!! pretty minimal.... hasn't reacher version 1.0 yet... i686 optimized... I tried installing earlier but the cd I was using was scratched so I got a bunch of cd read errors.... devices seem to be handled wierd compared to other distros... a hard drive was something like /dev/disc1/partition1 or something of the sort instead of like /dev/hda1 a bit odd I must say.... seems like its worth a try though, havnt heard anything bad which I guess is good news. ----- cant post 2 things in a row so I have to edit.... shouldn't there just be a timer for like 6 hours or something????? well I guess Im giving up on this distro for now... Seems like it's headed in the right direction but I'm just a little too lazy for it... I thought it'd have a utility like slackware to view packages and remove etc which it doesnt.... the install told me I should just do a base install which I did and when I decided 2 try and install X I couldnt figure out how to get it to let me install the entire X package like in the setup program.. I even looked for the setup program on cd but I think it's in a bin file or somethin..... o well, Im reverting back to slackware in which Im going to do a very minimal install and add only the stuff I really need... Im pretty good w/ the basics of linux but Im going to try and dive a little deeper into how everything works... subjects Im looking to tackle are compiling a kernel, modules, patching, shell scripting, some basic gtk programming and just getting to know some of the more inner workings of linux...
