What would you upgrade first and why?

Hey all,

First time poster, long time reader.

Anyway, I have a system that does everything I want it to do. But, if you're like me thats no reason not to upgrade.

My system specs are:

AMD Athlon 64 X2 6400+ Windsor 3.2GHz BE

ASUS M2N-SLI Deluxe

Patriot Viper 8GB (4 x 2GB) DDR2 800 (PC2 6400)

WD Raptor 80GB

WD Caviar Black 1TB

EVGA GeForce 8800GTS (G92) 512MB

OCZ GameXStream 700W ATX12V SLI Certified CrossFire Ready PSU

ZALMAN 9700 LED CPU Cooler

Its all in a COOLER MASTER Stacker 830 RC case. Displayed on a Acer P243WAid 24" 2ms(GTG) HDMI LCD. Running Vista 64-Bit Home Premium.

I can play any game, most on high. But it's been over a year now and I am feeling the urge to change it up. Any changes would have to be significant, in either performance or looks, but not necessarily "earth shattering".

Any suggestions?

I'm not like you and if you're happy why not leave things alone? ;)

Put everything in a new case and pretend it's a major upgrade.

How about a new graphics card?

Cheers

Paul

True, lol. But if you're into cars/bikes like myself, there is always a reason to screw with something that isn't broken.

I have found the same thing has infected my PC and now I want to "hot rod" it as well(plus its TONS cheaper and my wife doesn't doesn't complain...as much).

Graphis card is a good start.

Blah, nothin' wrong with the graphics card yet. They're still rebranding them and selling them!

I'd probably go for a Phenom II and a AM2+ motherboard :)

Same here, that 8800GTS is still pretty fast when compared to an aging dual core Athlon.

Ok, seems like the general idea is a graphics card or CPU/Mobo.

On the processor side of things, how soon will the AM3 stuff be out and is it worth waiting for?I love the new Phenom II 940, but will I see a noticable difference in gaming? As I have heard the dual core CPU's tend to "do it better".

On the graphics side of things, I can pick up another 8800GTS 512 for $100. Will the SLI beat out the GTX285?

And which Mobo if I decide to go the CPU route? I'm pretty stubborn when it comes to my brands and the Asus I have is the 4th one I have owned and they have never given me one ounce of trouble.

Thank you all for your input it is much appreciated.

I'd sell that and get a 4870 1GB or a 260, maybe even pick up one of those 4770s that were just released. They are a terrific bargain since they are stronger than 4830s

Biostar makes a nice 790GX board for pretty cheap that will support a newer Phenom II and has the better southbridge.

the best part is you can keep that ram as it won't limit your overclocking (if you're planning to do any) at all

How does AM3/Core I7/DDR3 sound to you? B:)

granted that would mean a major overhaul, so AM2+ is also good :)

How about water cooling your system?

Or why don't you just buy a nice 7.1 sound card if you have a shopping bug going on.

Enjoy!

Water cooling...hmmmmm.

Something I don't need, but would look cool and be fun to install. That sounds pretty sweet. Imma look into that!

Seems like we are on the verge of a new era in Procs, so I think I'm going to wait a bit longer on the CPU switch. I will only buy AMD and they are getting better again.
