Its time to build a new one.....

First I just want to say hi to everyone as i just joined this forum.

So after some good long years with my old pc, its finally at its limits and its time for something new. I'm not much of a tech kind of guy (thats why I'm here) but i do enjoy playing games alot as well as some video/photo editing from time to time. I'm planning to use this rig until it breaks and deteriorates (3-4 years?) so i want to use decent parts while upholding a budget of around $1500 (if necessary, i can spare another hundred or so). The list is just a rough and its mostly based off of some of the other posts here:

CPU - Intel Core i7 920 Nehalem 2.66GHz

Cooling - ???

- Was looking at some liquid cooling before but not sure if its necessary. Maybe something on the cheap side.

PSU - PC Power & Cooling Silencer S75QB 750W

Mobo - ASUS P6T Deluxe V2 LGA 1366 X58 ATX

RAM - Corsair Dominator 6GB DDR3

HDD - WD Caviar Black 1TB

Case - ???

- There are too many to choose from but looking for something a little more stylish. Suggestions would be nice.

GPU - XFX Radeon HD 4890

- For the time being, i'll be running on 1680x1050 resolution and might consider the 260 or the 275.

If I have some cash left over (probably not) I might consider a new monitor as well.

I'd greatly appreciate any and all inputs.

Thanks.

I'd go 260 for that resolution if I were you, the 275 would be better but not justifiable at that 1680x1050 get a 4870 or 260

Jesus, how unexpected, Mythos.

You're suggesting a GTX260 when xSTKx is planning to spend $1500? And plans on keeping it for 3-4 years?

I say you go for the 275. :)

Although I don't know i7 systems well, while they run hot you might be fine with decent air cooling.. If you're willing to spend extra on cases, check out lian li.

A OC'd 4890 beats out the 260, and competes around the area of a 275, I say go with that 4890. Nice build, should run fast. :angry2: (jealous)

doesn't a stock clocked 4890 beat the 260 already? 4870s already beat 260s in half the cases, so with the clock speed boost I'd assume they be equal or better (not including the nvidia favoring games)

hmmm... if that is the case then i will go with the 4890 (might have to look into that a little more). They are roughly the same price so thats good :D . All thats left now is picking out a case and cooler.

Thanks for the input so far.

I would go with the GTX275, antec 902 case and thermalright true copper with 2 high airflow fans, also try and get the i7 920 DO stepping, you will be able to hit 4.0 with no effort at all. What DDR3 would you be getting, 1333 or 1600, because 1600 will be the fastest and it is not much more expensive

but including the ati favouring games?

Read this review. The 4870s match up with the 260s nicely, but the 260 wins in power consumption plus the physx support.

The 275, the original card we were considering, plays nicely. And that's with beta drivers. That would be a smart pick, in my opinion.

Yeah I might be a little biased. Coming back to nvidia from ati has been a great experience; but at least im not missing out on anything with a physx enabled card. :D

I meant including all the fair games, it does well. Games like Dead Space and PT Boats make NO sense to me. The "ATI favoring games" don't cut the frames off the nvidia cards, however they programmed those two games to target the ATI architecture specifically and bumps them down like 150 fps.

I'm definitely going for the 1600 and i have a case in mind right now.

As for the cooler, I've read alot of posts and reviews and they all seem to point at ones like the Thermalright Ultra 120, CoolerMaster V8, and Noctua NH-U12P (seeing theres a lack of coolers for the 1366 boards). Should I pick up one of these or wait for more coolers to come out?

Thanks.

I'd personally go with the Noctua cooler.

If however you won't be overclocking for the time being, I'd stick with the stock cooler and wait.
