Looking for a used car.

So yeah, My car broke down Saturday night. If it costs more then what it is worth to fix it I am going to be looking for a new car.

My current vehicle is a 1997 Dodge Intrepid 3.5L w/ 140k miles on it. Its a nice car but it has seen better days.

I was really hoping to hold out on buying a vehicle until I at least got my internship and or a good job, but it might come down to having to buy a new vehicle.

Right now I am a full time student who works as a delivery driver for a Pizza Hut on the weekends. So I need a car!

I am having the guy next door look at it today and he is going to tell me what I am in store for as afar as repairs.

I am a fairly tall person 6'10" so car shopping is a bit difficult for me.

Some features I would like to have in my next vehicle are... Manual transmission, ipod connectivity or XM radio, 2d coupe, sleek, black or a darker blue, gas friendly.

I am looking for payments to be about $200-$250 a month, and am looking at maybe being able to finance $9,000-12,000 under a 4-5 year loan. What is the current finance rate on used vehicles? I have been looking around and have gotten a huge range of numbers.

The few cars I have been looking at are a Honda Accord, or Chevy Colbalt. I am looking in the range of years of 2005-2007. I have sat in both of those cars and they are pretty comfortable for me being a tall person such as myself hehe. So yeah anyone have any ideas?

Can't go wrong with an Accord. Given the current financio-political climate I'd avoid and GM and Mopar vehicles. The government will honor their warranties regardless, but it's always nice to have a dealership to take it to while it's under the manufacturer's warranty.

Unfortunately I can't really contribute to the thread, but just wanted to say I'm in the market for a new card too. I've currently got a 1999 Saturn SL good little car but I just want something new. I'm looking for a truck my self. Preferably a toyota tacoma if I can find one.

well my neighbor the mechanic just came over and said the car sounded like death, thinking I blew a piston or something idk. He pulled the dipstick out and there were metal shavings in the oil which aint good.

So yeah the broke college kid gets to go try and find a new car!

First off, set your ceiling budget, and then start looking at cars $3-4k below that. That way you'll have no problem paying tax, title, tires, et cetera. Then, start looking at private sellers, and make sure you get the vehicle inspected if you're really interested in it. Find what you want, then research it, find out any known or common issues, and so on. Then, price out the insurance on it. Most banks will require full coverage if they're going to finance you, so keep that in mind.

Get a used Volkswagen Golf or Jetta! Yes, they may not be the sleekest and best looking cars, but you can drive those until you die and it'll still run! They're zippy if you don't get the smallest available engine, extremely good gas mileage, and remember, they're German engineered! ;)

In the current market unless you have *great* credit history or a monstrous down payment no dealer will finance you on a used car. I went through hell trying to get a loan for my car (2007 Cobalt SS) even with a $7000 down payment and a 720+ credit score. :(

WOW!!! Holy sh_t! Where do you live? The local GM dealers here(Seattle) are selling cars/trucks at HALF MSRP! I went down just to see what was up and with $45 down and a credit score of 640 they were stompin' their diks to sell me a truck.

I just laughed at em and went to the Ford dealer, bought a crewcab F150. GM owes me(and you) a car...we already paid for it.
