New member, new i7 build...thoughts?

Hey guys

I am new to the whole OC thing but I have been doing a little bit of reading on it. Basically I am getting ready to come home from a tour overseas and decided to build myself a new desktop PC as a gift to myself, haha. I have built PCs in the past but have had to skimp on parts here and there and never really got the best stuff...just whatever I could afford at the time. So now I bought what I thought would be some of the best components to slap together and build myself a gaming rig that would last me for a while. At first I was going to get the i7 965 Extreme but after reading I saw that the 920 was definitely a better value due to the overclocking potential so I picked it up instead. Anyways, below are the components I chose...critique and/or give me some tips to tweak some more out of this system if you guys have any ideas. I plan on upgrading to watercooling if I need to but to be honest it is a little intimidating since I have never dealt with it before.

Case - Thermaltake Spedo

CPU - Intel i7 920

Heatsink/Fan - Noctua NH-U12P SE1366

Mobo - Asus Rampage II Extreme

Vid Card - BFG Geforce 295 GTX

RAM - 6GB Corsair Dominator DDR3 1600mhz

Power Supply - PC Power & Cooling 860w

HDD - Western Digital Black 1TB

DVD/CD - LG 22x DVD +/- DVD Burner SATA

KB - Microsoft Reclusa

Mouse - Razer Death Adder

Monitor - ASUS 22" 2ms Widescreen LCD

At the moment I am also torn between a SSD or one of the new velociraptors (maybe 2x in RAID 0) for OS and games. SSD seems a little to quirky for my taste but if there are any suggestions for an SSD drive that is pretty reliable and not stupid expensive like the Intel ones I will look into recommendations. Looking forward to your input, thanks!

Pimpin', I'm jealous B:)

I personally don't feel the Velociraptors are worth the price. They are very solid drives but worth the price is where I'm not so sure about. As far as SSDs go, there are really only two at the moment worth buying - Intel X25-M and OCZ Vertex. A 80GB Intel will cost you $320 USD roughly and a 60GB OCZ will cost you $180 USD, so the two are quite a bit apart in pricing. The Intels are the best with the best reliability, firmware and ease of setting up supposedly. I haven't tried SSD so I can neither confirm nor deny. But if you are looking to treat yourself, I'd go 1 SSD for your O/S and programs/games and then use that 1TB for storing other files. Those WD Caviar Blacks are very solid drives though and you can always decide to try SSD later.

Oh and...

Welcome back home :)

Oh, since you're getting a GTX295 I'd think about getting a monitor with higher than a 1680 x 1050 resolution. I'm pretty sure I know which Acer monitor you are going for as I was thinking the same one for 2nd display and its a heck of a price deal, but if you decide to not go SSD or additional HDDs you could get a nice 1900 display - just throwing the thought out there. :)

I think I am going to go with the OCZ Vertex 60GB. It seems like a good size for the OS and a couple of games/other apps. I should start reading on that stuff...they sound like they are a little more technical setting up compared to the good ol' platter drives. I am just going to stick with the ASUS monitor for now though. I have a Samsung 1080p TV (37" i think) if I might use as my main monitor if my desk will fit it ( I seriously doubt it will right now, moving in a few months though)....I don't watch a lot of TV on it anyways. It is mostly for movies and xbox stuff. So the ASUS might become a backup or travel monitor if that happens!
