Diy Chipset Cooler

Hey... I was having problems with my LX northbridge getting way too hot @ OC of 83mhz fsb, I arrived @ a mega cost effective solution that anyone could benefit from, so I thought I should share...

Step 1: locating that socket 7/370 hsf combo (I was lucky & have plenty)

Step 2: dismantling and cleaning is going to make the whole excercise much easier...

Step 3: choose your weapons, hacksaw/grinder/dremel cleaning burrs with care

Step 4: 'slap' a fan on it... I had no 40mm's so I adapted a 50mm ;)

Attach with thermal pad... easy... heaps better cooling than the 0% h/s i had previously and due to its size (larger than stock NB h/s) would be an efficient replacement for the notorius greeny... and you could always refine it further than this Ghetto proto-type. :D

EDIT:

Lastly I have no statistical data yet, for improved cooling benchmark... but I can run this baby (celeron 400) @ 500 now, come hell or high water... where before it was unreliable and twitchy @ times...

Please post any suggestions as this is 'a work in progress'...

Well like I said in my first post (edit)... I haven't any means of testing thermal efficiency of this 'adaption' ... however as the Intel LX chipset has NO heatsink what so ever... and the system wouldn't run trouble free r/t NB heat issues... where as now it can, so I'd say that was a definite improvement and considering it's summer here @ 35c+ outside in the shade... I couldn't be happier with the results :D

Airflow in this desk top case isn't great (it's cramped in there :P) as you can see in the below illustration...

I need as much power as I can 'squeeze' out to :smack: the MACs :P

Yeah, that will definitely do better than a no-sink solution, or the Greeny.

Those screws don't seem to be doing anything other than hovering. I'm assuming they're just gripping the corners of the sink.

It looks like you can keep the leftovers from the sink and make yourself some ramsinks as well. Or slap a few together and make a matching SB cooler. Just for looks.

Hmmm it actually fits quite tightly... but for added security I used small cable ties to attach the fan @ the corners (though I didn't take a pic @ the time) :)

Cost = $0.00 - performance = :D

EDIT: sorry about the typo in the intro' too late to fix it now though :O

Ha 35C thats warmer then my water cooled dullie by 3C. Being its summer there and winter here, it snowed last night about 4inches. (we hardly ever get good snow)
