greengiant912 Posted April 22, 2009 Posted April 22, 2009 From what I heard they are great for torrents in the fact that it has bandwidth management built in or something. I think you can also hook up a SATA drive directly to one of them and download directly from the nic to the drive. I got to talk with a guy from Killer like a year ago and he explained the benefits pretty well. The idea they have is pretty cool, but like others mentioned you really don't see a whole lot of performance increases. If money is no issue by all means go ahead and buy one. DLS2008 Posted April 22, 2009 Posted April 22, 2009 Basically, they're just another thing to spend money on that you don't really need.
oblivescence Posted April 22, 2009 Posted April 22, 2009 Here is a test for you, ping your router. I bet its less than 1ms (if its wired). now open a torrent get it downloading greater than 1mbps and have two concurrent http downloads bringing your total down to something like 1.5mbps down with multiple open connections. now ping your router, it might be up to 1 or 2ms. Thats what mine is. So, even heavily loaded, the most a better network card could cut off is 1-2ms. Not worth it. I know this only tests latency, not throughput, (cant really upload allot to the router), but it should give you an idea of how little benefit you are going to get from this. Unless you really think its going to lessen the load on your cpu that much. if there is something im missing someone please tell me, but I see no benefit from these cards. maj0rgamer Posted April 23, 2009 Posted April 23, 2009 (edited) in theory, these newer cards that should be out soon seem to pack quite a punch...especially with evga on board with the one linked in the first post of this thread, and the one that should follow it with like twice the memory. basically, they seem to be like having a computer within a computer strictly for networking purposes...bypassing the windows network stack, which seems to take extra time. thanks for the replies. is there anybody on here that has any experience with one of the first models? if so, have you done any benchmarks? something like this may not make much sense to the casual gamer, but to a competitive gamer it may mean more...especially if the competition has it and it does work that much better than onboard. so how about it competitive gamers...anybody have any experience with the first couple models. it does seem that the newer models are going to blow the first couple away, which is something else to keep in mind... plus it's difficult to accept newer technology it seems...take ddr3 for example. anyway, just a few thoughts... please feel free to further enlighten or expand on the topic. Zertz Posted April 23, 2009 Posted April 23, 2009 I see this like Aegia's PhysX card a few years ago. Sure, it helps in a couple very specific situations, but it's really just an expensive toy. Integrated NICs are good enough and CPUs are faster than ever. I can't really see the usefulness of this, even Atom is fast enough to handle this kind of work. uneedav8 Posted May 5, 2009 Posted May 5, 2009 Good NIC's make a difference. I would go for an Intel Pro 1000 or Broadcom NetXtreme.
premiumgfx Posted May 10, 2009 Posted May 10, 2009 Basically, they're just another thing to spend money on that you don't really need. I agree. Based on the reviews I've read they provide little benefits over an integrated controller. I think you'd be better off with a better router/internet plan. sirloganthestud Posted May 30, 2009 Posted May 30, 2009 Dido Maj0r Gamer. Do any of you have personal experiences with the Killer NICs?
sirloganthestud Posted May 30, 2009 Posted May 30, 2009 (edited) After some research, I found that the K1 gives little to no performance increase. In fact, it performed worse than onboard in some games. The M1, however, provides a decent benefit. In one test Crysis was played and the system with the M1 saw a 10% increase in FPS. However, you do have to remember the price tag: $250. That's a hefty price unless you're a die hard gamer or an enthusiast. The reviews for the M1 are listed below: http://www.tomsguide.com/us/killer-m1-nic,review-1083.html http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/Bigfoot...ks/KillerNIC_M1 The review for the K1 is listed here: http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,2845,2105487,00.asp Edited May 30, 2009 by sirloganthestud
