New Build Having Issues

So I posted over in the mother board forum about an issue I had. That was quickly resolved due to a silly mistake of mine. However, now I'm having a separate issue. Here's the background:

Clean install of Vista Ultimate 64 bit.

Build:

Asus P6T Deluxe V2

Core i7 920

GeForce 275

6gb XMS3

750w Power

Everything works fine, except when I plug in my ethernet, to either port on the Asus mobo, nothing happens. No network is detected. No cable is detected as plugged in. I installed the NIC drivers off the Asus disc. Device manager reports everything working fine.

I use Verizon DSL, plugged into a Linksys wireless router (BEFW11S4 v2). The computer I'm posting on (hereinafter HUSH - the working one) is using Vista Premium x64, and is plugged into the router via ethernet cable. The new computer (hereinafter HAF932) is also plugged into the router via ethernet cable, but it doesn't work.

I've tried multiple cables (including the one that currently works for HUSH). I've tried multiple ports on the Linksys (which, I've found out, has 2 dead ports). I'm out of ideas.

First one to solve my problem gets a cookie.

hello;

have you tried clicking on the computer icon on the lower right corner of screen?

go to network and sharing center, then diagnose and repair...

it should walk you through resetting the network adapter.

I've tried that. It tells me that I need to plug in a cable. That's the issue.

Try updating your network drivers, I recommend using this program

http://www.innovative-sol.com/drivermax/

It's a free program and it will tell you which drivers are outdated, i recommend making a backup before updating your network driver in case anything goes wrong, but so far I have had no problems with this program. By the way, after download, it will ask you to register, go ahead and do that, since its required to activate the program, but its free so.

Check your router. It is possible that the port is dead. Move it to a port on the router that you KNOW is working (maybe it has something else plugged in atm).

If it works, you know that port of your router is dead.

I know I have 1 port on my router that died after about 3 years of use. (so I got a free HP 24-port gigabit switch from HP for free to make up for it :D )

Have you tried connecting your computer directly from the modem and removing the router out of the picture? If you haven't, I'd try that before anything else. Especially since you mentioned you only have 2 good working ports. Minimize your variables and focus solely on one issue at a time.

Since you have DSL, don't forget to install your ISP's crappy software or you won't be able to connect.

If after you have done those two things and it still looks bad you might have bad ethernet ports on your motherboard. I'd probably RMA the board before I flashed with a new bios as I don't see why you would have to do that for a new motherboard fresh out of the box. That said though its not like Newegg will check to see if you did that before they honor an RMA.

Thanks everyone for the responses!

I'll go through them:

ertxz18:

I updated the driver using the disc that came with the Mobo. Additionally, since that program needs to be registered online to work, it unfortunately is useless to me. The computer that's having the network issues cannot get online.

DeathNote:

Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately, I had the same thought, and have already using a working computer / cable to test the ports on the router. 2 ports are dead, 2 are live. I've tried plugging the HAF932 into both of the working ports. Neither one works.

ebarone:

I've used 4 different ethernet cables now, including the one that works for the HUSH. Thanks for the heads up, but unfortunately, I don't think this is the case.

Fogel:

I'll try that now. Unfortunately, I don't remember my Verizon DSL login password. I grabbed the username from the Linksys set up, but the password shows up as just ***'s. Hopefully I'll be able to reset it or something.

If I RMA the board, will it matter that I've already installed programs on the existing hard drive (including an OS)? Isn't it an issue to switch Mobo's and not format the hard drive?

EDIT::

As per Fogel's suggestion, I tried plugging the DSL straight into the new computer. This works beautifully. Now the question becomes - how do I fix the rest of the set up to work for the other computers on the network?

Currently, there are only 2 other computers that need to work. One needs to be able to access the internet wirelessly, and one needs to be able to access it via ethernet. Right now I have a NetGear ProSafe 5 Port Gigabit switch, and the aforementioned Linksys router. The HAF932 has 2 ethernet ports, so I guess I could keep the DSL plugged into the new computer, then plug it into the Netgear, and then plug the old computer into the NetGear, and buy a new wireless router in the mean time?

seems like it's the router that was causing the problems...

maybe the ethernet port you initially were hooking the new computer to is bad (router not pc?).

did you try all available ports on the router for the new computer? what about the one the older pc was perhaps working on?

maybe you indeed just need a new router.

Just giving everyone a heads up:

Thanks for the suggestions. I ended up purchasing a new router, and now everything works perfectly. I'm really confused why the last router didn't work with the new computer, even in so much as to give me a "limited connectivity" connection or something...but who knows. Problem is solved, and I have a gigabit wireless-n router now that I didn't have to pay for. Fine by me.

Thanks again for everyone's help :)

No problem :) I like to eliminate the variables one at a time. Removing the router is usually my first trouble shooting technique.

On the plus side, at least it was the router versus a motherboard issue. ;)
