uneedav8 Posted April 15, 2009 Posted April 15, 2009 Roadrunner Bandwidth Caps WTH? I have been loyal to timewarner for all these years because I love the Roadrunner. If they start this in my area, I will cancel my cable tv, internet and phone service through timewarner. This is the worst time to pull this B.S. sYstEmATiC Posted April 15, 2009 Posted April 15, 2009 Roadrunner Bandwidth Caps WTH? I have been loyal to timewarner for all these years because I love the Roadrunner. If they start this in my area, I will cancel my cable tv, internet and phone service through timewarner. This is the worst time to pull this B.S. Ive been saying the same thing for the last few months. I've had RR since it was released in my area around 2001 or so, and I currently pay $50 a month for the RR turbo which is 30mb down 768k up. The competitions fastest speed is 6mb down and 1mb up. I WILL switch to that slower service if they impose caps in my area. Complete BS
OCrookie Posted April 15, 2009 Posted April 15, 2009 this is absolutely ridiculous first Time Warner buys my previous cable company Adelphia after they finished installing and working out the bugs in the broadband network for the town, then raised the bill for all services, cut back the number of techs at the location. Now they are gonna want charge even more for less. Where does it end is it gonna be when the bill reaches 500 dollars for every household? With unemployment on the rise this something that just cant be tolerated.
fire_storm Posted April 15, 2009 Posted April 15, 2009 You should consider yourselves lucky you've been uncapped for this long plus I believe they do offer an unlimited data plan although it is pricey. My isp Cox has always had low caps mines 60GB download 40GB upload and because the only other internet option in my area is DSL which is 6 Mbp/s download 1 Mbp/s upload I have no choice but to live with it. Cox does not offer an unlimited data plan like roadrunner does.
LoArmistead Posted April 15, 2009 Posted April 15, 2009 (edited) You should consider yourselves lucky you've been uncapped for this long plus I believe they do offer an unlimited data plan although it is pricey. The unlimited plan is $150. $75 for the turbo package, with up to $75 in overage charges. So anything over 115GB is free BARGAIN! My isp Cox has always had low caps mines 60GB download 40GB upload and because the only other internet option in my area is DSL which is 6 Mbp/s download 1 Mbp/s upload I have no choice but to live with it. Cox does not offer an unlimited data plan like roadrunner does. With the turbo package I have, it would be very stupid for me to switch to the only other package available in this area (6Mb DSL). I probably don't go over 40GB in a given month, but I've recently gotten into downloading games from Steam, and Empire Total War alone is 15GB... almost half my allotted bandwidth. TimeWarner is catching a LOT of flak for this, and rightly so. I don't see the logic in charging people $15-20 more per month for a higher speed internet service, and still charging them more when they exceed the caps that are the same or barely higher than the regularly priced plan. Common sense told me the extra $15 premium every month was taking into account the fact that people who needed more speed were most likely downloading larger files... it just doesn't compute in my head. We've been happy TW customers ever since they came and bought out our local Paragon Cable in Texas almost 15 years ago. We kept them when we moved up here to the People's Republic, and we give them plenty of money - digital phone with all the options, TV with all the fancy premium packages, Road Runner Turbo, all that crap... Not fun times now that the prices of all the utilities and everything else we buy are going to start going up... while the value of our dollar is going down Edited April 15, 2009 by LoArmistead
ir_cow Posted April 15, 2009 Posted April 15, 2009 (edited) i'm switching to fios soon as it comes to my town or just DSL if TW tries to cap my town. they did it just up the lake only 2 hours away....soon it will be all of NY. i pay $50 for TW and fios is alot faster for only $60 more. i can't wait to switch. been over 5 years and they just had to screw it up with these caps. fire_storm Posted April 15, 2009 Posted April 15, 2009 I think this is all a result of no competition in the isp market. In most areas you have 2 realistic choices either Cable or DSL and the cable company's know that not many people are going to switch back to dail up or DSL because of the slow speed (in most cases with DSL) or go with satellite internet from companies like Dish Network because of the very low bandwidth cap and higher cost per month then cable. And this is why they can charge more because they know if you do the math there service has a better value then the other ones even when they raise the price. This isn't really that surprising considering cable company's have been well know for ripping its costumers off. I mean just look at how they make you rent cable boxes for every TV you want to have HD quality channels.

I get 25mb/s download and 300kb/s upload for $24.95 per month. I also got a free HD Box and free HD channels from Time Warner. But if caps are introduced I'm losing them. I think that has alot to do with you being in an area where there is a lot of competition in the broadband market. You've probably got some excellent FIOS and DSL options that forces RR to keep pricing low to compete. In my area, we have RR, DSL, and Satellite. Besides RR (20 down, 512 up), the next package we have available is DSL (6 down, 1 up). RR has no incentive not to keep prices low, which is why I beleive the only markets they've announced bandwidth caps in are the ones where they are the only cable/FIOS providor. What I'd hate to see happen is Time Warner continue to run their company inefficiently and jack my prices up to help subsidize your lower price. Other people are able to operate profitably offering a fewer variety of services at a lower price, that offer greater bandwidth. The only reason TW has for not being able to do this is they are not running their company efficiently... which is very likely. I'm tempted to sift through some of their financial statements now to have a looksey at what how they've been doing lately... LoArmistead Posted April 15, 2009 Posted April 15, 2009 I started reading through their fiscal year 2008 SEC filing (10-K) and am learning some of the cable "lingo." Cable "overbuilds" are where local authorities grant franchises for other internet/phone/cable providers to compete in the same operating area as another provider. TW is forced to keep their prices low in overbuild areas or else they'll be run out of town. In an effort to make up for that, they're going to make people pay more in areas where there is no overbuild, e.g. where local government has granted TW an exclusive contract... wrote your local politicians, folks. I also saw on their balance sheet they had a HUGE current liability coming up they have to pay (over $2 Billion, up from $129 million the year before.) I am looking forward to reading about what that is. ^_^ . It's also important to note that they are in the process of spinning off their TW Cable unit and making them seperate from Time Warner, Inc. This leads to believe one thing: 1) Their cable business is the segment that is smothering them, since they are wanting to get it off their books, and the first thing the separate cable entity is looking at is raising prices. Either your still on your intro rate or like like Lo said you live in an area that has a good broadband competition market.
