all i have to say is this:

i made a 3D game, pretty basic but with high system requirements, and it never got more thhan 12 fps on my main rig. On my laptop however, with it's Ati Mobility Radeon 9700 256 Mb the game would constantly get over 40-60 fps

the aplication was not optimized for any video chip as most graphics aplications knows as games ussualy are so i believe it to be a quite accurate sort of bechmark and becouase of this (and the dazling performace my dad is getting on his laptop with an X300) i'm going ATI for my next rig, whnever i may get it

If your specs are up to date, you're comparing a 5700 to an 9700m. Those two card weren't even ment to compete with eachother. Not to mention the 9700 is just much more efficient than the 5700 anyway.

Hm, I'm loving ATI at the moment. Aside from having to reinstall Ati Tray Tools once, I don't think I have had anything go wrong with it to annoy me... yet! Plenty of things with my nVidia card ended up annoying me :)

you can argue til the cows come home. remember the GF3 Ti 500? yeah, it was great.

But wait! then there was the ATI 9700! That was great too.

It's cyclical really. That's why i try not to hold too much of an opinion - i just go with what is currently the best priced card for the ability.

software-wise, i did find ATI to be a bit more intuitive when operating a second monitor and tv-out etc...

I had that problem with my x700pro. After extensive research (scratching my head and staring at the screen) I realized the problem was due to my computer having the latest ATi drivers and SP1 installed... Once I installed SP2 the flaming arrow no longer lagged up, they went smoothly.

As an avid TW gamer I must say that the best way around this particular problem is to not use flaming arows at all. Flaming arrows are woefully ineficient against all but the lightest infantry, they somewhat efective in scaring elefants and chariots (in RTR and SPQR) but should be used in this role only when more specialised toops (aka skirmishers) are unavailable.

Sorry for being OT but i was scanning this thread in order to help decide on my "new" AGP graphics card

and I couldn't help myself. Lucky for you no-one said the

"B" word or this post would never end.
