9800GTX v 2x9600GSO

Recommended Posts

I would like to increase my folding points a little and at the same time reduce my electricity bill.

The power consumption of the 9800GTX is approximately 110W maximum against the 9600GSO at 46W so running two of these may reduce the power consumption?

Can I fold with two 9600GSO's via the Windows Systray client?

Would I see a significant increase in folding points?

The card I am looking at is the ASUS 384MB 9600GSO I believe these are best for folding with the 96 pipelines, is that correct?

I am not a big gamer but occasionally like to play games like Call of Duty 4. Will the 9600GSO be OK at 1680x1050 even if the quality isn't the best?

Thanks for any replies.

Paul

You are correct, 2 9600GSOs will use less power and give you more points. Yes, you can use the win systray client to do that.

Unfortunately I have no idea about gaming performance. Although the 9800GTX will obviously beat the 9600GSO in almost any game. Also your Intel chipset rules out SLI.

You can't SLI whilst folding anyway so that's not a problem.

Just want to know how one 9600GSO games?

Cheers

The 9600GSO with 96 pipelines is about 8800GT level as far as I know, and I know from experience that 8800GTs can play COD4 very well at 1680x1050 :)

If what king said is true, I can max out everything on COD4 and play with respectable framerates (30-40ish). On COD:WAW it's pretty much the same story.

- yes, you'll certainly notice reduced power consumption

- you certainly can! the best part is that you'll avoid the dreaded "cards w/different numbers of stream processors production reduction" that's mentioned tons over at the official [email protected] forums.

- that's correct - IIRC, any 9600 GSO w/96 SPs will have a 192-bit memory bus, and will also have a total memory count divisible by 192.

- you can overclock these cards like crazy, and my GSO spits out WUs almost on pace w/my 8800 GTS 512.

- you should be able to max COD 4 and/or WAW at that resolution using the GSO. you may have to drop AA/AF, but I dont know how big of a deal that is to you. tbh, I dont notice jagged electrical lines when I'm getting shot at. YMMV :D

here's the OC specs for my GSO, an XFX 9600 GSO w/768mb DDR2

- stock clocks are 580/1334/500 (core/shaders/memory)

- overclocked *STABLE* @ 648/1674/527

Thanks for the replies guys.

Not too bothered about AA/AF so I'll definately be looking to find two 9600GSO's.

After a little research two 9600GSO's will reduce my PPD over a single 9800GTX!

Is this not the case?

hmm my 9800 gtx gets about 5000-6000 ppd depending on the work while my 8800gs ( basicly the same as the 9600gso) gets about 3000-4000.

could you show/tell where you found that out? I'm not doubting you, I'm just surprised.

also, any chance your research based its findings on the 48 SP GSO instead of the 96 SP GSOs you planned on using?

lastly, overclocking the GSOs shaders will boost your production tangibly, dunno if that was taken into consideration.

:)
