Doodleface Posted April 4, 2009 Posted April 4, 2009 Hi, I'm new here and I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this question but here it goes. My computer recently had a type of crisis, the mobo crashed due to a power spike sent from a faulty power switch on the case (don't cheap out on cases) Thankfully it was still under warranty. I just got the replacement a few days ago and after re-installing all the hardware to a new case I get no signal. My question is: Should I be receiving signal? I haven't installed anything, I haven't even put a disk in the drive yet. Do I have to, or should it be booting fine because I'm using an old hard drive. Sorry if I'm being unclear. Thanks in advance.

Crazy_Nate Posted April 4, 2009 Posted April 4, 2009 I'd recommend building your computer outside the case the first time you're trying your hardware out. If it won't boot properly like that, with minimal components, you can be sure that the problem is one of those... Check out my build guide (in my signature / pinned in this forum), it has a pretty surefire way of testing What hardware do you have? CPU, motherboard, memory, power supply, graphics card are the most important. You'll recieve a signal on your monitor if you boot with at least this: CPU, motherboard, a single DIMM, a graphics card (or onboard) and the power supply. If it doesn't, verify all of your connections. If that doesn't work, look at starting your PSU with just a hard drive plugged in (see here). scr4wl Posted April 4, 2009 Posted April 4, 2009 You should be getting a "signal" regardless of if you have an OS on your HDD or not. When your turn your computer on you should be able to POST and enter BIOS. If this isn't happening somethings wrong. 1. Try reseating the RAM 2. As CJ said please describe your problem more clearly 3. What did you replace? 4. What hardware are you using? 5. Make sure everything is correctly powered And W3lc0m3 t0 th3 0cc
Verran Posted April 4, 2009 Posted April 4, 2009 I'm very curious to know how you discovered that your motherboard problem was caused by a bad power switch on your case. That's very intriguing to me because it seems impossible.
scr4wl Posted April 4, 2009 Posted April 4, 2009 I'm very curious to know how you discovered that your motherboard problem was caused by a bad power switch on your case. That's very intriguing to me because it seems impossible. I've seen it happen because of a case fan. The fan was powered with a Molex connecotr. The wires that come out of the Molex conector were exposed. The exposed wires on the molex somehow got pressed up against the case and shorted everything. The worst part is that it was a prebuilt computer .
Doodleface Posted April 4, 2009 Posted April 4, 2009 Specs: Mobo: Asus P5N-D CPU: Intel Pentium Dual Core 2.66Ghz Video Card: GeForce 9800 GTX RAM: OCZ Dual Channel Platinum (2 x 1024MB) PSU: Ultra LSP650 (650 watts) Case: (old) Ultra e-torque (new) NXZT Tempest HDD: Western Digital Caviar 500GB What Happens when the computer turns on: All fans start up (including ones on power supply, and video card, DVD drive works fine, monitor displays "No Signal". I'll try re-seating everything when I go home, thanks for all the help everyone.

The worst part is that it was a prebuilt computer . Lol, i did that with my PSU, left a 5v rail exposed and forgot that it didnt need to touch the other black, but the case would be earth as well. So I got a lot of heat which melted the plastic coating to the case and caused the PSU to shut it self off so quickly it was already off when i ripped the plug out.... that was silly
