Weird packet loss?

The other day while playing COD4 mp I was getting the 'bad connection' image here every like 5 seconds it pops up for a second and I lag hard for like 1 second then everyone skips to the place they should be at. Anyway I was like this is weird its not constant lag its like lag spikes.

 

So I open command prompt and ping google.com and get an average ping of lets say 90ms. Then every 6 or so pings I get a random 1500 or so ping. But its only one and its only every like 5-8 pings. So its like for one second every few seconds I lose all packets or something stupid. I don't really know what the hell is going on. I'm not much for networking but does anyone have any idea what could be happening?

Packet loss could be a lot of things like your network card is going, bad networks cables, somethings wrong with your router.

 

Ping 127.0.0.1 (loop back address) to test your NIC if you get dropped packets possibly somthings wrong with your nic.

 

Try pinging the router and check for dropped packets.

Try pinging another computer on your network and check for dropped packets.

I pinged my nic a few times and no packet loss and normal speeds. Pinged my router and bam, im getting the lost packets going to my router. Its every 8 ping requests or so I get a random 1000+ ms. Thanks for the help, still doesn't explain it all though because my brothers computer isn't having any issues with the wireless.

 

At least I have a start now, any more advice would be appreciated going to start troubleshooting.

At this point it sounds like to me it could be a bad network cable or something is wrong with the network port on the router your computer is plugged into.

 

First try re-setting the router and then pinging the router and then see if the packet dropping goes away.

 

If that doesn't work what I would do is change your computers network cable and then ping the router and then see if the packet dropping goes away.

 

If that doesn't work try plugging your computers network cable onto a different port on the back of the router and then see if the packet dropping goes away.

Yea the thing is im wireless, which throws a another wrench in the mix.

 

What I've concluded so far:

 

I got out my laptop to ping with it (also wireless) I was getting the same packet loss. Good pings for like 5-8 in a row then a random 1200+ ping. So it can't be the wireless card in my desktop (unless by some random coincidence their both fubard in the same way ) anyway I have tried resetting the router multiple times, even the modem. Still the same thing, I can plug directly in to the router and its fine, no packet loss fast connection.

 

so its essentially just the wireless abilities of the router are toast I think. I don't really know what to try to fix the issue. But I do no its wireless only and its router side. Anyone have any ides?

Are you getting good signal strength?

 

Well the only other thing I can think of besides a busted router is some thing in your house is giving off EMI interference like a Microwave or a 2.4ghz device which is causing the problem.

Yea I tried bringing the frequency on the router all the way up and all the way down no help.

 

Yea good signal strength. It's so weird how its only broke every 10 seconds. lmao its so stupid. The problem has to be fixable, the issue just doesn't seem like a 'broken router' issue. If that makes sense, it works fine accept every few seconds I just get a really long Bryan latency. Sometimes it will be fine for 20 seconds, other times every 3 pings I send I get back wit like 1400 ms.

 

Pisses me off don't have the money to buy ANOTHER !@%& router, I've bought a new router every !@#% month it seems like they just keep crapping out, different things every time.
