Verran Posted April 2, 2009 Posted April 2, 2009 I have a couple of recommendations. First, the motherboard. Why Intel? Why not a board that will let you overclock if you ever want? I mean, this is OverClockersClub.com... B:) Second, why DDR3? You'll see practically no benefit over DDR2 on that chip. Not only that, but it's going to cost you more. So you'll pay more, but not get more. Why not save money by getting a cheaper DDR2 motherboard and cheaper DDR2 ram and instead spend the money on something like a video card upgrade which would be more in-line with a high end quad like the Q9550 that you're looking at. DDR3 is still a waste of money IMO. The only reason to use it is if you have to (like on i7 processors, for example). For 775 chips, stick to DDR2. IVIYTH0S Posted April 2, 2009 Posted April 2, 2009 DDR2 rocks, only get DDR3 ONLY GET DDR3 if going i7 get a better video card instead of a wasted investment in memory Pick out a nice p45 chipset board and bring that quad above and beyond a stock i7

They are fairly inexpensive. I could use the extra cash to go from 32 bit to 64 bit and get 8gb of ddr2 ram. (my current motherboard is am2) I also just noticed that i7s are almost the same price as the q9550. Any cheap mobos that will be compatable with i7s? Any cheap mobos that will be compatable with i7s? the i7 is pretty cheap but since ddr3 is expensive and I don't think that there are any real cheap x58 boards out, I'd say a Phenom II or Q9450/Q9550 would be the best picks. 8gb of memory is a tad excessive if one is budget minded. (even non budget minded 4gb is the best for anything other than some intense situations)

IVIYTH0S Posted April 2, 2009 Posted April 2, 2009 OK so i was looking at the phenom II Noticed cache size was only about 2mb....is this enough? which phenom 2, plus the cache is a different type of cache so it may have lower than average but it's used differently. MOBO is http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/documen...product=3451996 Just now noticed it only supports up to 89 watts (very frustrated) so i guess im outa luck with the processor
redtigerdragon Posted April 2, 2009 Posted April 2, 2009 that's also only a phenom, not a phenom II.
IVIYTH0S Posted April 2, 2009 Posted April 2, 2009 that's also only a phenom, not a phenom II. and you'll need a different motherboard if you'd wanna overclock anyway. Personally I'd get an x3 720 with the Biostar 790GX combo deal or the x4 940 with the Biostar combo.
