Silverfox Posted April 2, 2009 Posted April 2, 2009 Okay a few questions surrounding the XB360. Many thanks for help in advance. 1) The Arcade Version has no built-in hard disk, fine. Can you simply use one of the USB ports to plug in a hard disk (flash/HDD) to utilise download content and game updates? 2) Did the SATA drive used in these consoles change much since the 'Core' console name was replaced? I'm thinking in terms of being able to flash the drive etc. 3) Is the HDMI socket a regular socket, i.e., plug and play with an HDTV using a normal HDMI male-male connector? I've spotted a few good deals on the Arcade you see, and can't justify the extra on menial hard disk sizes if you can plug one in to get the same desired effects. d3bruts1d Posted April 2, 2009 Posted April 2, 2009 1) No to the USB drives. You'll have to purchase one of the Xbox 360 drives, or a memory card. 2) Not that I know of. 3) AFAIK.
Verran Posted April 2, 2009 Posted April 2, 2009 No. Don't think so. Yes.
Silverfox Posted April 2, 2009 Posted April 2, 2009 Okay how big are the memory cards? It seems a little odd to me, but fairly obvious too - make more money of course. 256MB is obviously very limiting - how big exactly are game saves? I was wondering, as Bioshock for example, has an update for proper widescreen support ... this would be too big for the 256MB onboard memory, correct? WhenKittensATK Posted April 2, 2009 Posted April 2, 2009 (edited) 1) The Arcade Version has no built-in hard disk, fine. A: I'm not sure about using USB hard drive as your main OS, but you can mod any notebook laptops but you would still need the xbox 360's external hdd cage to do it. Microsoft also ended its promotion on the $20 refurb 20 GB hdd. I couldn't find it anymore and the link is dead. I think other people are selling them for $50. Kinda expensive for 20GB if you ask me. "The New Xbox Experience will require 128MB of free space." From what I'm told game saves are about 40 MB. Too lazy to go in the other room to check. 2) Did the SATA drive used in these consoles change much since the 'Core' console name was replaced? I'm thinking in terms of being able to flash the drive etc. Check out: forums.xbox-scene.com 3) Is the HDMI socket a regular socket, i.e., plug and play with an HDTV using a normal HDMI male-male connector? Yep, it can be used with any male to male hdmi connector. Edited April 2, 2009 by Krazyxazn
Silverfox Posted April 2, 2009 Posted April 2, 2009 I guess I'll consider the 60GB version instead, as it seems a few games really do need an HDD to play properly and gain the full benefit. There is a good deal on for the 360 with Forza 2, Mass Effect and Halo 3 you see and my Wii is great, but I have the HD bug and I get my annual bonus of aprox $4000 shortly Save some, spend some, holiday some. Thanks for the very fast replies!
Verran Posted April 2, 2009 Posted April 2, 2009 With the HDD refurb/swap trick that Krazy is talking about, the Arcade version was quite a steal. But if that's dead now, then the 60GB is probably the way to go. That's what I ended up getting around Xmas time. The price has really fallen on that one too. With Forza, MA and Halo 3, it's a pretty darn nice package (Halo 3 is 'meh' for me, but I know it's a big seller). You get your driving fix, your RPG-style fix, and your FPS fix all in one And I know what you mean with the 'HD bug'. The Wii is nice, but I've got all those HDMI ports on my TV/stereo... It seems like such a shame to leave them unused
WhenKittensATK Posted April 2, 2009 Posted April 2, 2009 (edited) You can probably get those 3 games really cheap used. Since I'm pretty sure everyone who bought them no longer plays them now. Silverfox Posted April 2, 2009 Posted April 2, 2009 Yeah I have 4 HDMI ports ... if I go ahead with this, all four will be in use! * Blu Ray player * Laptop HDMI connection * WDTV 1080p streaming box * XB360 Madness.

Bah, htpc ftw. 4 ports, 2 in use. 1 is the cable box and the second is the htpc/gaming machine/blu-ray.
Silverfox Posted April 6, 2009 Posted April 6, 2009 Bah, htpc ftw. 4 ports, 2 in use. 1 is the cable box and the second is the htpc/gaming machine/blu-ray. No, not really. The whole idea of getting the WDTV box is to negate the need for an entire HTPC. The TV has four ports to be used, and I am using them. Not forgetting the fact that when I get a receiver, it will have three or four HDMI inputs anyway. It would have been pointless splashing out for an HTPC to game on really. Wireless keyboard and mouse on a sofa for gaming? I think not. Oh and I grabbed the 60GB Xbox 360 by the way. Seemed logical. I got Halo 3, Mass Effect and Forza 2 with it. Grabbed Bioshock, Gears of War and Perfect Dark Zero second hand for dirt cheap. Only thing annoying is that the Xbox sounds quite noisy ... makes me think I have one of the old dodgy ones, but I'm not fussed seeing as it has a three year RROD warranty.
