JBags Posted March 28, 2009 Posted March 28, 2009 hey all, was just wondering if running crossfire on a mobo at x8/x8 lane config would have a severe, noticable performance loss as opposed to x16/x16? I'm asking because I plan on upgrading soon (once I have a definite yes that I can return to my summer job) to a phenom ii 720, and am getting a 3870 off a friend on the cheaps, and i was wondering if I can save a little $$ by going with a 790GX chipset, which does crossfire x8/x8, over an FX (x16/x16), without it hurting the CF setups performance significantly.. Thanks!

Thanks! i hear even 295's (which yes I know isn't crossfire) still don't get limited bandwidth with 8x PCI Express 2.0, so you should be just fine. Plus the 3870 is a PCI express 1.0 card so you should be more than fine. go for the 790GX Edited March 29, 2009 by IVIYTH0S
Zertz Posted March 29, 2009 Posted March 29, 2009 (edited) You'll be fine with 8x/8x Edited March 29, 2009 by Zertz
JBags Posted March 29, 2009 Posted March 29, 2009 (edited) Cools. Thanks guys! Though it really probably doesn't matter that much because I'll prob upgrade sometime during the time of the HD 5xxx series to a single card config (nvidia or ati, doesn't matter, whichever has the best bang for the buck at the time =P) it makes me uncomfortable dropping huge amounts of money at a time... which is why i'm not planning on getting a 4850 when i upgrade. especially with this recession and all, never know when that money might be necessary. anyway, thanks again! Plus the 3870 is a PCI express 1.0 card so you should be more than fine. I had to read this twice lol cause i was fairly sure the 3870 i was pci-e v2.. and according to ATi's website, it is. http://ati.amd.com/products/radeonhd3800/specs.html Edited March 29, 2009 by fearspartan117

I would need to me (and technically no other card on the market would have to be either haha) but you will definitely be fine. BTW an upgrade from a 3870 to a 4850 is such a small improvement that it would not be worth the money (though I'm not super sure how the two compare). I hope the 5870 will debut with the specs it's supposed to, if it does then it shall lay waste to the competition.
