PC Won't Boot: Not even from CD

Recommended Posts

Reassembled components;Cleared CMOS; detached and reattached HDD and tried boots several times and it finally worked, but now it was seeing all the files on the secondary HDD but would not open them...

So, I replaced SATA cables reattached everything and am reinstalling OS right now.

Should Smart HDD capabilty be enabled on my Gigabyte desktop PC?

And, thanks for all the help you guys!

Having Smart HDD enabled wont make any difference either way. Its just a monitoring system for your drive that will alert you if the drive is about to have a hardware malfunction. It would not affect the usability of the drive.

Your problem sounds to me like you have the wrong hard drive order set in the BIOS. I have the same motherboard, in the Advanced Features section, highlight where it says "Hard Disk Order: [Press Enter]" and hit Enter. Then make sure the hard drive you have the OS installed on is the first drive. Below the HDD Order option is the First Device, Second Device, Third Device options. You can set those any way you want, but if you ever want to be able to boot from a CD you need to make sure the CD-ROM is set before the HDD. If that doesnt fix it then you'll need to put your XP disk in and go to the Recovery Console and do a fixmbr command.

oh boy, now you have to take 'administrative control' of the second hard drive's contents to actually access the files and use them....been there before....

good luck...
