RogerDeath Posted March 26, 2009 Posted March 26, 2009 I've got an AMD Phenom x4 9950 2.6GHz oced to 2.8GHz and a 3870. The problem I am having is that because the GPU client requires the use of one core, my SMP folding should go down right? If so, then would running three uni-core clients work better? Turophiliac Posted March 26, 2009 Posted March 26, 2009 I'm pretty sure the GPU folding client doesn't use "any" cpu power at all... (realistically it uses a tiny bit, but it's not one whole core's worth.)
RogerDeath Posted March 26, 2009 Posted March 26, 2009 According to task manager and AOD it is using 22-25% of my overall processor (basicly a full core). That is the whole reason I ask.
Turophiliac Posted March 26, 2009 Posted March 26, 2009 wierd, that almost sounds like you are running a CPU client instead of a GPU client. but if that's not the case, then your own original suggestion of running that and 3 more instances should be the most beneficial. DLS2008 Posted March 26, 2009 Posted March 26, 2009 I'm pretty sure the GPU folding client doesn't use "any" cpu power at all... (realistically it uses a tiny bit, but it's not one whole core's worth.) It uses more than you would think. It does use almost a full core. You can use the F@H Affinity Setter to set the GPU client to one core and the SMP client to the 3 other cores. Don't use the single core clients, they're not worth it. The SMP is still better. Your best option it to set up a virtual machine with Linux and run the SMP in the Linux and the GPU in Windows.
RogerDeath Posted March 26, 2009 Posted March 26, 2009 Thanks for the advice, and congrats on the position DLS!
road-runner Posted March 26, 2009 Posted March 26, 2009 The reason it is using so much is its ATI, Nividia hardly uses any. As said use an affinity setter to set one core for the card and the other 3 for SMP. I went through the same thing the last few days with some ATI cards, I ordered 2 more nvidias and put the ATIs on the table... Ahh, that makes more sense, yeah mine uses almost no CPU power even when folding on both my gfx cards at the same time.
road-runner Posted March 26, 2009 Posted March 26, 2009 There are some settings you can mess with if your running Cat 9.3s with the new core, I got tired of messing with it myself... http://foldingforum.org/viewtopic.php?f=51&t=9162
DLS2008 Posted March 26, 2009 Posted March 26, 2009 There are some settings you can mess with if your running Cat 9.3s with the new core, I got tired of messing with it myself... http://foldingforum.org/viewtopic.php?f=51&t=9162 I'll have to look into that and re-do all of my stupid Folding stuff. The Cat 9.3 set threw my desktop for a complete loop. First it jacked up my sound with the integrated HDMI drivers... Then took a while to sort out, it's still not the way I'd like, but I can live with it for now until finals are done. Next, it screwed over both of my Linux virtual machines and they won't boot now. Guess it's finally time to load Ubuntu 8.04 like I've been saying for a couple months (I had Ubuntu 8.10). Lastly, the best part, now my 2 GPU clients are EUEing! What the . ATI!!! So pretty much, my desktop rig that was putting out ~9,000 PPD is almost completely down! Anyways, enough of my rant against Cat 9.3, ATI uses a good deal of CPU power. My 2 GPU clients are using ~40% of my Q9450!!!
tjmagneto Posted March 27, 2009 Posted March 27, 2009 Nvidia cards are starting to sound like the way to go.
RogerDeath Posted March 28, 2009 Posted March 28, 2009 Tell that to my gaming machine that doesn't handle SLI, just Crossfire.
