Queenz Posted March 21, 2009 Posted March 21, 2009 Just called Chase today to ask something about my credit card, and the lady tells me that she wanted to confirm that if I made a $3200 purchase at Costco. First thing comes to my mind WTTF??? They tell me that they denied the transaction because it looked suspicious and was going to contact me first. Now I have to wait 30-60 days for a brand new card and line and cancel my current credit card then shred it. I barely use my card and when I do I always watch who I give it out to (Mostly Newegg) and have not lost my card. The woman told me that everything else is safe (No identity theft of such). She told me that it was most likely found out by using software to generate a random credit card number or something which some how happened to be mine. People make them to fit over the regular ATM machines. They read your card and a camera will watch your PIN number and then the crook uses your card elsewhere. After I first saw this, I look closely at any/every ATM I use before putting my card in... Double Density Posted March 21, 2009 Posted March 21, 2009 Scary isn't it. I had the same thing happen on my business Amex a decade or so ago. The guy was only charging small amounts of things, so it actually took a couple of months for me to notice it. It ended up all being internet porn. Actually I'm thinking it might of been someone at the post office cause that's the only time I used it within the past 3 months. The old lady that took it and swiped it at the counter is really nice and handed it back to me right away, but looks can be deceiving I guess. Unforchantly things like this happen nowadays and all you can do is try to protect yourself the best you can. Credit card information goes through a lot of places when transactions take place and a lot of security is really out of your hands. It was a convention held at Microsoft's headquarter in Washington and they had hired a third party company to cater lunch. The company didn't have credit card scanners, so they used those old fashioned slide things that make a carbon copy of the card. Well, 3 days after the convention my Dad check his online statement to find 4 purchases at a pharmacy were billed to it. Here's what happened to me right around the time L4D launched (bought the 4 pack to split with friends that's the pending steam charge): The company was legit, and apparently someone was attempting to have an HP TouchSmart 22" shipped to them in FL at an address that matched mine, in other words if my address was: 123 Moo Rd Mooville NC 27299 They tried: 123 Moo Rd Miami FL XXXXX So yeah no. Anyway they also called the company vs online ordering. The guy I talked to @ http://www.electronicsshowplace.com/ (I actually called them) gave this info and had already canceled the order before I called. Took me about 3 days to get my replacement card. That's not bypassing jail, that's just a detour on the way to jail. But I agree If you mainly use your credit card online, you might look into seeing if they have secure online numbers you can use. 333 Posted March 21, 2009 Posted March 21, 2009 (edited) My wife works at a bank and they received a list of around 5000 names of people who had their info stolen from some big info gathering company. All those names were just people here in Arkansas and they were told that this was a nation wide thing.
